And please don't flame, I don't feel like reading thru 1500 posts for an answer...

I am waiting for the new Star Wars MMORPG to come out but in the mean time I am looking for something else to play...

Is it TOO late to start playing WOW? I don't mind being a newb, I catch on pretty quick, but am I TOO far behind at this point to be a...force to be reckoned with anytime soon or is everyone SO advanced at this point that it would not be worth it?

Thanks!

If you can get the hang of the dungeon system and find a leveling guide, you can hit max level very quickly. You won't, however, be able to get into any end game content for awhile. Unless you find people (usually real life friends) willing to carry you through raids and give you gear, you'll be lacking for awhile. With the new expansion and new content, it will make it a lot easier to catch up though. Everyone, except the top geared elite, will be using quest / 5 man items to do the starting raids.

Hmmm...I don't know any RL people that play. Can you suggest a good leveling guide I might read up on?

Will anything I accomplish in the 10-Day free trial be carried over if I become a paying player?

Thanks!

Your progress during the trial carries over if you decide to pay.

I don't know if there are any leveling guides now that all the content is brand new. Leveling is easy anyway, you don't really need one.

Now is actually a VERY good time to start playing wow. I've jsut re-subscribed after a year away. The new expansion (Cataclysm) will put everyone on a level footing, gear will be replaced very fast!

Also they have 'massively' re-worked the zones that you will be in from lvl 1-60! Making quests mroe fun, the whole process smoother and more enjoyable

I 'think' that if you play a free trial, you can subsequantly upgrade that account to a full account and thus not lose any progress.

Hope you enjoy it

(ps. My advice would be not to use a levelling guide for your 1st play through... just enoy it a little bit, your brain should be a good enough guide! Save guides for levelling alts, when speed is more required)

I would suggest not using a guide either. Maybe pre-bc guides were good, but especially now it's pretty easy to just level without and I imagine more fun. WoW isn't like Eve where there's some inherent gap. After the last expansion was a few months old I went from just starting on a new server to being in a guild that ended up ranked 20th in the US in a couple of months. Getting to the general skill/gear/level of the average person playing isn't hard at all.

I forgot about the zones changing. I haven't played in awhile. You might talk to some people and try to get in on recruit a friend. It offers 3x experience for 90 days I believe.

The in-game quest tracker right now is working wonders, and as a first playthrough it helps with learning where to complete quests. Just to sure to read the quests every so often as you may need to talk to someone before you can start completing the quest (flight path to the location, vehicles, etc.)

Also since Cataclysm is coming out on the 7th, you are just as well off as everyone else is by getting a new start in the game. All my ICC gear is being replaced by greens that everyone can easily obtain with quests. And that makes it a great time to maybe be a fast leveler or helpful player and get into a guild that runs 10 or 25 mans casually or more hardcore depending on your view of what you want to do.

You will also be able to make friends in-game while leveling up since most servers usually have others leveling up right now as well for new classes or races and you may group with them. I normally try to befriend a lot of people on the server so as to have many connections. There are always some trolls or other people that may you avoid just like any other game, but for the most part I am amazed by the people I have met.

Good luck and come back for more questions or advice if you need it. The only dumb question is the one not asked. At least that is the my general rule of thumb.

This is the perfect time to get started in WoW since there is an expansion coming out on December 7th. The expansion will introduce two new races, so you can be sure that there will be other people leveling up new characters from scratch. It also raises the level cap which effectively resets the gear. The very best gear in the game right now becomes just ok gear at the new max level if past expansions are any indicator.

Play a F2P game, like lord of the rings online. Its just as good as wow, or better, and its free to waste time till the MMO you want.

WoW isn't a hard game to get into at all. If you have basic common sense you'll be ahead of half the player base from that alone.

Just restarted myself, havent played in 2 years and leveling is significantly faster (Recruit a Friend does wonders as well). Since the last patch i have seen a lot more people at lower levels
