All of WoW has been down all day.

I smell a big fat rollback to last night's tapes coming. Barring a meteor striking all server farms simultaneously I would find this to be unacceptable from an IT perspective.

You mean you have to keep your servers up and your customers happy too?

I only have to keep the customers happy whose money I want. I also figure that fewer running servers means fewer customers that can be unhappy.

The change control process is currently down for maintenance...

I'm a bit pissed at blizzard but I just hope that they learn from their mistakes. The only problem I've had from them thus far is with the current server outages (read: all of them). It sucks only because I'm a student and have a limited amount of time to play... and now I have the time and can't. Other than that I haven't had any issues. I play on a high pop server and never have had to wait for a mail/AH query for more than about 3 seconds. Never experience extreme lag except in IF and other huge areas. However, I can deal with a bit of lag anyway... I can't deal with complete outages. It would be like my cell phone carrier or ISP telling me that I wasn't going to have service for a day. Simply unacceptable. A brief server outage every once in a while is expected for maintnance. This should be done in the lowest possible usage timeframe (probably early morning for a game). This should not be scheduled for afternoon and take well into the evening...

You seem to be awfully bitter about WoW. This isn't exactly the first WoW thread you've posted in.

Ah but such wisdom.

I DID buy WoW and I'm bitter about it. I spent money to get this way, he did it for free!

Nah, it's on par with or better than other MMORPGs. The lag, however, is ridiculous. I often surf AT while waiting on mail or AH queries.
I don't think that matters, it's too much downtime IMO. Just one more reason why I won't buy the game.
It's how MMOGs operate...
But should they? They're selling you a service that you can use... Sometimes. Ick.
I don't really know how else they could do maintenance, squash bugs and add content, at least without having twice the hardware, which is obviously unfeasible for financial reasons. They generally do schedule it for wee morning hours so as to disrupt as few players as possible, and many titles have varying time-zone servers so that what are wee morning hours for some aren't prime-time hours for others. While perhaps there's a better way, no MMOG I know of utilizes one. It's a fact of the genre which most veterans are fully aware of and used to. Keep in mind that a lot of the frustration being vented in this post isn't over downtime (I'm in WoW right now), but lag, server instability and a perpetually swamped login server - and I fully agree with it. However this isn't technically downtime, and certainly not scheduled.

All of these reasons combined make up a miniscule fraction of the total downtime, which is mostly server crashes.

What other MMOs have as much downtime as WoW?

Titles that don't:
EQ1
EQ2
FFXI
Ragnarok Online.

Those are the 4 others I have experience with, none of them come near the downtime WoW has experienced.

Funny sidenote:

One of my favorite days in EQ1 was when they totally borked agro and the lag was horrendous. It was directly after a patch. They brought the servers down and fixed it a couple hours later. There was no rhyme or reason to how agro was controlled. I tanked The Idol and Rallos Zek and later the Avatar of War (only got him to 75%, but we had never killed him before that, so it was extremely weird) with a primal velium claidhmore, which wasn't near the top of the heap for agro. I didn't even have to taunt for agro. Ahh, so many good memories.

It's some port forwarding, not rocket science.

Now that the patch has actually finished my rant can continue!!

1. It now takes 3-5 attempts to get logged on with a considerable delay between attempts.

2. All add ons are disabled (as expected I suppose).

3. They've added new action bars to the game which do not display the hotkeys assigned to them as the 1-10 keys do. Disabling the action bars and using my old bottom-bar add on is no longer possible...since my stealth button which used to appear above my bottom bar now obstructs it instead.

4. All my keys have been set back to defaults.

5. Hovering my mouse no longer displays my health/energy like it used to.

6. They have fixed the rogue bug that caused us to get an extra combo point on occasion, but failed to fix the bug that causes us not to get ANY combo points on our opening move. Additionally the Vanish skill is still broken (not that something like Vanish/stealth would be important to a rogue or anything :roll

All in all it's been a frustrating evening of trying to get WoW to work properly instead of simply playing like I'm PAYING to do.

Bah. Fvckem. Soon as Empire Earth II, Doom III expansion, Battlefield II or any of a few others come out I'll just violate my EULA, Ebay my WoW and be done with this sh1t.

Clearly an MMO is not for you...
this is all normal stuff for any MMO...

you are pissed off becasue they have a downtime to patch things to make your game better?

and then they break your 3rd party ADDONS! OMFG OH NOOES! the sky is falling!

they made the game 400% better with this patch.. it was the same on patch days for EQ same for AO same for DAOC....
patch days are always a day you DONT PLAY..
big deal go have dinner with your girl... go see a movie... set your downloader and LEAVE THE HOUSE! omfg...

I disagree with this.
I can understand some problems once in a while, but just "patch days are always a day you DONT PLAY.." wouldn't be acceptable.
Maybe that's the one day I don't have a date, beer with friends, working over, etc.

Luckily I haven't run into this problem, when we got this latest and greatest patch I downloaded it(again, from DC since I hate BT), installed it, updates Cosmos, and I was ready to go.
No downed realms, no login queue, no problems, I was up and running in no time.

If I was just told to expect one day of no playing for every non-trivial patch however, that would piss me off.

Saying "it's the same in every MMORPG" isn't an excuse.
I could always try that at work, "Yeah, I'm upgrading our Apache server today, so don't try to access our site until tomorrow, hey lots of other admins are like this too".
My boss would surely love that one.

I say this becasue 1 million users hammering the log ins on patch days is insane.. not to mention any problems they might encounter that is common with MMO downtime...

btw I work for a very large Oil company here in the US and we pull servers for 24 hours at a time all the time.. it happens.. sometimes it is the only way to repair a server or perform needed maintenance... the difference is we can do it on the weekends.... where an MMO no matter what day or time you pull your servers someone is gonna complain..

I love how some of you guys accept this as normal instead of expecting to get your money's worth. You're MMO-whipped.

I understand plenty.. we are a 24/7/365 uptime company but there are situations when servers have to come down.... no company no matter how good thier techs can do everything when the server is up..
sure we have 5 other exhange servers and 18 other DCs to reroute to but this isnt the same thing.. read your EULA for WoW .. NOWHERE do the guarantee you access 24/7/365...
Infact it specifies that you will NOT be able to and that it is at thier conveinance that the servers will be worked on.

as long as they are workign to make the game better.. how about get off thier backs and let them work... they trying to help the users here...

this is like pansey ass users calling the helpdesk all day every day on announced outage complaining that they cant use thier freaking VPN, CITRIX etc....

You know that Tuesdays is maintenance day EVERY week.. patch or no patch this is the day they work on the servers....
why bother whineing about it?

I swear people are soo spoiled.. you agreed to the terms if you dont like it quit whinign cancel and go play your freakign playstation where there are no servers to worry about..

FFXI had more "scheduled" downtimes and they were sporadically scheduled to prevent them from always interfering with one fan base. However, it was very rare that FFXI was down longer than scheduled, and even more rare that there were "additional issues" after the patch, as seems to happen every single time a new patch is released in WoW. To be fair, by the time I played FFXI, it had been out for over a year in japan.

I didn't buy the game. One of the reasons I haven't bought the game is because it's always down. Everytime I turn around they're spending more than an hour patching their systems, all the sytems are down at the same time, someone is complaining that the server's slow, etc. The game should be as close to 24/7/365 as possible. So far their admins have shown me that they're unprofessional morons.

Really, more than an hour worth of downtime a month is a sign of incompetence, why do people act like it's ok to NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY THE GAME THEY PAID FOR?

Yep.
Again, I'm happy since I've yet to encounter any unannounced downtime, but like I said, if WoW was having as much downtime for me as it obviously does for some others, I'd be plenty pissed.

In a MMORPG I don't expect them to keep everything online while patching for example, hence the service windows, that's fine.
I do however expect them not to exceed those windows by any significant margin, and I do expect them to keep the servers up and running outside of those windows.

Of course, 100% uptime isn't a requirement for a MMORPG the same way it is for a banking system for example, so if a server goes down, fine, just fix it in a timely manner and I'm ok with it, $hit happens.

But I sure won't call a situation where servers are down once a week normal, that's not what I'm paying for.
And I sure as hell won't defend it.

sure we have 5 other exhange servers and 18 other DCs to reroute to but this isnt the same thing.. read your EULA for WoW ..

If you worked for me you would be fired. Seriously, you would be cleaning out your desk while I found your replacement.

We make servers stay up here, not excuses. Just because you are so addicted to Warcrack that you'll suck blizzard off just to get it doesn't mean that we should find their poor service acceptable.

This most recent patch:
1. Was a patch to fix problems they introduced in the last patch (a regression).
2. Left the support forums flooded and completely unavailable for the PAYING customers.
3. Was done to all realms simultanously (just like the regression patch was).
4. Went from a 45 minute window to a full day.

How is any of that OK? You're only defending this because we have called your precious blizzard out. Take your blinders off and see what you are paying for. A single incident like this shout put their IT staff in hot water. Howver, this ISN'T a single incident is it? No, it's a pattern.

So far their admins have shown me that they're unprofessional morons.

Really, more than an hour worth of downtime a month is a sign of incompetence, why do people act like it's ok to NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY THE GAME THEY PAID FOR?
Here you are again Seriously, is there something you're not telling us? Did you lose a friend / gf to Everquest or something? You have way too big a chip on your shoulder for someone who doesn't even play a MMOG, I'm very suspicious.

If you look at the timestamps you will see that I posted this before you and your boyfriend got all upset about me posting something anti-WoW. I said I'd leave you to the circle jerk, but this came before that.

If enjoyment of the game doesn't outweigh your (understandable) frustration with the service, you may want to consider quitting or trying another title. I guarantee you'd come back from any Sony title (EQ, EQ2, SW:G, Planetside) laughing at how silly you were being and admitting Blizzard is doing a great job.
