WSXGA using 1680 X 1050

I have a laptop and I was recently playing with it a bit. I some how unlocked the option to go 1680 X 1050. The max for my WSXGA is 1440x900 and I have a 8600M GT. So, how did I do this? I am trying to duplicate this situation with my other computer. Does anyone know how?

can you be a big more specific? what kind of laptop is it?
If it is natively a 1440x900 panel then outputting higher res either get truncated or gets resized to a lower res, actually reducing qualtiy compared to rendering in native res to begin with...
It is a nasty bug if it lets you go to a "higher" res.

If your panel is natively 1680x1050 then it should be outputting in it to begin with, but might have had the bios lock it down for some reason... in which case more data is needed on the specific model.

WSXGA+ is 1680 x 1050, so either you are wrong in that it's actually WXGA+ that is 1440 x 900, or that you didn't know your monitor's true resolution.

If you managed to get it working without the desktop being bigger than the actual screen (move your mouse to the edge and see if that "moves" the screen around the desktop, then your monitor is WSXGA+ 1680 x 1050.

During the proccess before I set it at a high resolution, I was messing with my external monitor (whose native resolution is 1440x900).

Yes I know what the native resolutions are for WSXGA and WSXGA+. I am confident that my laptop is WSXGA, or else I wouldn't be posting here asking how did I do it. Also, I managed to get larger resolution and the screen does not move. It's not stretched, or the screen does not "move" around, however you want to put it.

Well either your panel is 1680x1050 native or not. If not then its scaling down. If it is, then it was scaling up before. All that really matters is which image you prefer.

I could push my old 1440 * 900 display to 1280 * 1024 and 1680 * 1050, but that only resulted in a distorted pictures that weren't scaled beyond the screen. Does the WSXGA+ resolution look better or worse, than the WSXGA resolution? If there is no difference, then something is really wrong about that setup - odds are however, that one will look better than the other. Whatever looks the best, is the native resolution and the one that is best to use.

there will be no distortion as both pictures are EXACTLY 16/10 ratio... there will however be fuzzyness... one of them requires scaling that will cause blurriness of the image... which resolution do you experience more blur in?

Not just fuzziness. Depending on the quality of the scaler (usually pretty bad) you can get aliasing and color issues as well. Simply dreadful.
