Can't you identify any tracks around the pond? Do a little detective work, bird footprints will obviously look much different than mammal prints. My guess would be a raccoon. And they can live pretty much anywhere from holes in trees in the woods, to the drains in the streets of cities. And they can easily stay away from dogs b/c they are fairly smart and are good thieves.

Hi, don't know how you've never seen a racoon in San Diego, I have lived here 19 years and have seen racoons at each of the 6 homes I have lived in all around San Diego County. They live underneath houses, in sewers, anywhere they can. They are amazing survivalists. I don't doubt it was a racoon.

Sounds like coons. My neighbor had a small decorative pond with giant goldfish in it-fish kept on disappearing. Finally discovered that the racoons were dining at his pond.

Its amazing with all those fish you can tell one's missing. Nice pond btw, much nicer than my aunt's. If you live near wilderness its probably a raccoon. But it would seem to me that its a Heron still because I'm guessing a raccoon would leave at least part of the koi there wouldn't it? I mean it doesn't devour it whole bones and all right? A Heron or otehr bird would fly off with it though.
