Except most of these killers, kill themselves in the end so not sure why you think they want to be celebrities. They're just deranged and do it out of hate. If they wanted to be celebrities they'd wouldn't kill themselves.
Their killing tantrum is a response to their inconsolable circumstance. They are celebrities in their own minds imagining the crimes and their aftermath. They kill themselves because they recoil at the thought of what their life would be like after apprehension by the authorities. Plus, suicide at that point is very simple with a handgun. It's that simple.

I remember when columbine happened, it was pretty much a one time thing and it was quite devastating to think that someone did that. Fast forward to 10ish years later and now this stuff happens pretty much every couple months. They could probably make a reality TV show with enough episodes (one episode per shooting) to have a couple seasons. You know someone has thought of that, and considered the money it would rack up, but was probably told it's inappropriate.

No, it's called revenge. No celebrity sensationalism found. B/c history would show that if they stayed alive, they'd be celebrities.

Why the fuck is there an hour long TV show devoted to this fucking psycho? All they doing is showing that these psychos can become famous.

Yep, just giving them exactly what they want. Unfortunately people seem to love watching this shit, so they are going to keep doing it.

I don't think it's political. It's probably mostly about ratings. They all do it, everywhere.

Short clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PezlFNTGWv4

forensic psychiatrist explaining what the media shouldn't be doing, shown in ironic contrast to what they keep on doing. Apparently been saying this for 20 years, to CNN and other news media,

"don't start the story with sirens blaring..."

"don't have photographs of the killer..."

"don't make this 24/7 coverage..."

"do everything you can not to make the bodycount the lead story..."

"don't make the killer some kind of anti-hero...."

"do localize the story to the affected community, and make it as boring as possible in every other market, because every time we have intense, saturated coverage of a particular murderer, we expect to have one or two copycats within a week...."

It's quite unlikely that the rate of homicides and mass homicides hasn't changed. So much else has changed, how can that not have changed?

I'm not just talking about in the last 25 years, I'm thinking go back ~3 generations.
Crime rates started spiking up in the 60s, peaked in the early 90s, and are back down to late 60s levels.

Except statistics for mass homicides show a relatively flat trend.

these people would never amount to anything if they didn't do these things. so this is their way of becoming famous, making their mark on the world, being known for something.

Murder and Mayhem is profitable for the media. So if they can increase the amount of M&M via the power of media, it means better return on assets.

Bigger dividends, bigger bonuses, higher equity prices, happy investors and bond holders.

Well the data doesn't lie, I think whats the difference is that the shootings involving kids in school vs a drug deal gone bad or a disgruntled ex-employee, I can't remember ever hearing of any school shootings growing up, yea, there was no internet and stories didn't get plastered all over 10 minutes after the event but a mass killing at a high school or grade school would eventually make the headlines..

Isla Vista is right next to the UCSB campus but he was a student at Santa Barbara City College which may be about 5 miles away. IV is the low rent neighborhood for the Santa Barbara-Goleta area.

Columbine may have been an attempt to out do the school shooters at Jonesboro Arkansas. Luckily the bombs that Harris and Klebold set didn't go off.
