I was just able to check my email for the first time since 9 am today, the server and website has been getting swamped.

An email was sent to the whole university containing a statement from the school's president:

Shooting at Virginia Tech / Statement by President Charles W. Steger

The university was struck today with a tragedy of monumental proportions. There were two shootings on campus. In each case, there were fatalities. The university is shocked and horrified that this would befall our campus. I want to extend my deepest, sincerest and most profound sympathies to the families of these victims which include students There are 22 confirmed deaths.

We currently are in the process of notifying families of victims. The Virginia Tech Police are being assisted by numerous other jurisdictions. Crime scenes are being investigated by the FBI, University Police, and State Police. We continue to work to identify the victims impacted by this tragedy. I cannot begin to covey my own personal sense of loss over this senselessness of such an incomprehensible and heinous act The university will immediately set up counseling centers. So far centers have been identified in Ambler Johnson and the Cook Counseling Center to work with our campus community and families.

Here are some of the facts we know:

At about 7:15 a.m. this morning a 911 call came to the University Police Department concerning an event in West Amber Johnston Hall. There were multiple shooting victims. While in the process of investigating, about two hours later the university received reports of a shooting in Norris Hall. The police immediately responded. Victims have been transported to various hospitals in the immediate area in the region to receive emergency treatment.

We will proceed to contact the families of victims as identities are available.

All classes are cancelled and the university is closed for the remainder for the today. The university will open tomorrow at 8 a.m. but classes will be cancelled on Tuesday. The police are currently staging the release of people from campus buildings.

Families wishing to reunite with the students are suggested to meet at the Inn at Virginia Tech. We are making plans for a convocation tomorrow (Tuesday) at noon at Cassell Coliseum for the university community to come together to begin to deal with the tragedy.

If you have friends/family at Tech whom you can't reach, find a way to get to or contact the Inn at Virginia Tech.

I don't disagree with you there. People are the ones that pull the trigger. But the comments that made me throw my 2 cents were the ones regarding the law being passed to restrict students from carrying guns on the Tech campus. People were saying that had students been allowed to carry guns that it would have defused the situation and that just does not add up to me. I think you and I got caught in a different argument.

Maybe you need to check your math then junior, cuz it sure as hell adds up to me. What's so hard to figure out about being able to defend yourself? The only thing banning guns will do is put all the guns into the hands of criminals and out of the hand sof law abiding people. Dumbasses like yourself make me sick....

your language and demeanor does not add to the believability of your side of the argument, in fact, it makes pro CCW people seem irrational...

Thanks for your evaluation of my language and demanor. I'll try to do better for you next time.....

Within the past two weeks my college has had two (2) bomb threats and classes in those and surrounding buildings were all cancelled. I just found out that there was a shooting in one of the dorms just a couple of minutes ago.

One complete side of campus is locked down with cops, I just had a cop with a loaded shotgun walk into my class and tell us to stay put.

GOD, this is awesome.

Ummmm, you do realize that this is the largest mass slaying at a school in US History right?

you do realize he posted FAR BEFORE this went down right? you do? good.

Is it confirmed the shooter used a handgun? You would think you would need an assault rifle or shotgun to have that many fatalities. Either the shooter is a marksmen with a handgun or he had many many reloads.

umm...
no wonder people are so afraid of guns, they have no clue about them

It's a fact. Assault rifles and shotguns in the hands of a individual with minimal training will inflict more damage then a handgun. Thinks about this scenario.... I'm at the end of a long hallway with an assault rifle, you are at the opposite end of a long hallway with a handgun. Who do you think has the advantage? If the shooter today had them cornered in a small classroom, then a handgun would certainly be just as deadly.

of course an assault rifle would be more deadly, but a handgun is just as deadly.
from what i've read in this post, he killed several of them execution style, which is point blank to the back of the head. no skill needed there.

It's pointless for you guys to be discussing the legality of gun ownership; it's written into our Constitution, and it would literally take an act of God to remove or amend that right.

Keep the discussion on this tragedy.

So there were 2 seperate shootings? Was it 1 guy acting alone, or was it a group?

If we make it legal to carry conceal weapons then there will be a lot of people who will go and get it. Because if you know a bunch of people have it then you will want one to "protect" yourself. Look at the way countries are trying to develop nuclear technologies to keep up and "protect" themselves from countries that already have it. Anyone with a clean record and patience can get a license...that doesn't mean that those people won't ever kill anyone with that power. They can either flip out because their wife/husband cheated on them. They can accidentally jump to conclusions and mistakenly shoot someone over a misunderstanding because they thought the other guy had a gun and was putting them in danger. STUPID PEOPLE WILL GET THEIR HANDS ON THE GUN...GUARANTEED. Why make it legal to carry them and force other people to feel they have to get one to protect themselves?

your logic is fail

haha can't argue with that one. but whatever it is your opinion. i would just rather have a country that isn't like the countries in the middle east where guns are carried around in public, especially by kids. if you don't think escalation is inevitable then i don't know what to say. eventually automatic weapons will become legal. then armor piercing rounds. etc.

So, if all students were allowed to carry guns, this would have been solved??

Um yeah, I bet one of those students could have put a stop to it before 32 PEOPLE GOT KILLED!! Jesus, why is that so hard for some of your people to understand?

"Now, notice the difference here, please, President Machen. When the murderer was confronted by the man with no gun, he ignored him. The murderer punched him in the face. But, when the murderer was confronted by the two men with guns, the murderer put his gun down and surrendered."

It would seem to me the idea is to make sure the *murderer* never had a gun in the first place, not to make sure everyone else has one too...

The situation could just as easily have resulted in the CCW guys firing all their rounds at the murderer in a panic and hitting another 6 people in the process.

Guns are for wars, and for killing dinner, not for taking to school like a damn toy.

Not going with either side here, but the fact that students who were in no immediate danger paniced and jumped out windows, would make me wonder what they would do if they all had loaded guns.

My point exactly.

Sure, you can TRY to keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them, but it never works. Guns are very, very easily manufactured.

Also, those that carry tend to be a different type of person than you would normally run into. A CCW holder killing an innocent bystander would result in a homicide charge.

yeah, anyone with a foundry can knock out AK's since the inventor never bothered to patent

saddly this is true, its all well and good saying there shouldnt be guns in the first place...but if some one is determind enough they will get hold of one despite any laws that are made.
