no wonder people are so afraid of guns, they have no clue about them

It's a fact. Assault rifles and shotguns in the hands of a individual with minimal training will inflict more damage then a handgun. Thinks about this scenario.... I'm at the end of a long hallway with an assault rifle, you are at the opposite end of a long hallway with a handgun. Who do you think has the advantage? If the shooter today had them cornered in a small classroom, then a handgun would certainly be just as deadly.

of course an assault rifle would be more deadly, but a handgun is just as deadly.
from what i've read in this post, he killed several of them execution style, which is point blank to the back of the head. no skill needed there.

Your logic is ass - an assault rifle would be MORE deadly, but a handgun is JUST AS deadly...

well a handgun can kill you just as good as a rifle will.

come to think of it a knife will kill you just as much..

I am arguing with his statement about what "more" and "just as" mean, and not about guns in particular. Did the capitalized text not clue you in to that?

The difference is splitting hairs. In a battle, the assault rifle has the advantage, but against a roomful of innocents, both are pretty much equal in killing power.

See my response to waggy.

Look at the way countries are trying to develop nuclear technologies to keep up and "protect" themselves from countries that already have it. Anyone with a clean record and patience can get a license...that doesn't mean that those people won't ever kill anyone with that power. They can either flip out because their wife/husband cheated on them. They can accidentally jump to conclusions and mistakenly shoot someone over a misunderstanding because they thought the other guy had a gun and was putting them in danger. STUPID PEOPLE WILL GET THEIR HANDS ON THE GUN...GUARANTEED. Why make it legal to carry them and force other people to feel they have to get one to protect themselves?

your logic is fail

haha can't argue with that one. but whatever it is your opinion. i would just rather have a country that isn't like the countries in the middle east where guns are carried around in public, especially by kids. if you don't think escalation is inevitable then i don't know what to say. eventually automatic weapons will become legal. then armor piercing rounds. etc.

automatic weapons are legal in some places. silencers and suppressors too. not sure about the ammo tho.

My knowledge of guns laws are, admittedly, not up to date; so I wouldn't be surprised.

C'mon guys, can we keep this thread open ONLY for updates and general discussion of what it going on at Virginia Tech? If you want to argue find another thread. There are plenty of them here.

the gun topic is debatable in this thread but turning it into a grammar/nitpicking thread is beyond acceptable.

check out the pic on foxnews.com, wtf are they doing?

looks like they are carrying out someone that injured.

They way they are doing looks like a very clumsy and uncoordinated way of carrying out and individual.

That picture is embarassing. In my 40 pounds of gear, I can carry another soldier in 40 pounds of gear for a decent distance in a training environment. With real adrenaline pumping, even a 200 pound unconcious man would be easy to carry for quite some distance.
I think the guy was injured, as I believe they would leave the dead there for investigation.

And, you do not know when that was taken and where, and exactly where all the shootings took place. Maybe the guy was still going around shooting people and they got him out in haste.

I'm really curious to hear the stories of the kids who were in Norris hall, specifically how he got so many rounds off w. out anyone going after him. Also, how did he shoot up a dorm, not get stopped, allowed to roam freely on campus and then kill so many at Norris 2+ hours later. Shouldn't the cops have locked down campus after the first shooting?

I have a good friend who is a freshman in chemical engineering at VT. Luckily she is ok. She was in her physics class when this started to happen. This is just awful

yes, but not without hefty fees, liscences, and lots of background checking

So not arguing what he said, just how he said it? Nitpicking then?

NBC - description of shooter.

The name of the gunman, whom witnesses described as a young Asian man wearing a maroon cap and a black leather jacket, was not released. It was not known if he was a student.?

two handguns... the gunman could of use them one @ a time... each gun can carry upto 15 rounds... initial ammo in the beginning of massacre 30 rounds... time to replace magazine.. 3 sec maximun...

Unarmed students going up against a guy with 2 guns which I'm assume one will always be in the loaded position.... suicidal...

There's really nothing the students can do... I guess the only thing would be for some brave students to sacrificing themselve by bum rushing the shooter... thats the only thing.. but then theres just a small chance of that working if the killer didn't get up close to the student... which he didn't really have to..

Sad situation...

what are you confused about? rudee made a valid point and i would agree that this guy had to be a very accurate shot to kill this many. most random shootings have several wounded for every death.

Handguns used in the distance that he was likely shooting people from(indoors) are very accurate.

When I was there, that building had mostly "Engineering Science and Mechanics" classes, such as Statics, Dynamics, and Deformable Bodies. Lower level classes for all engineers and upper level classes for ESM majors.

and like i said, all he would have had to to was wound them. if they can't escape or no one rescues them in time, they can bleed to death.

So from my understanding this guy was mad at his gf or ex-gf and took it out on 21 other people?

Man, this is horrible. I feel sad for my friends in Virginia.

Let's keep the dickheadedness out of this thread. This is a history-making tragedy.

Guys, not everyone is a battle-hardened badass. The general reaction when hearing a gun shot is to duck and run. Now imagine someone emptying clips outside in a hallway in the building you're in. Most people are not going to try to bumrush someone in that situation. Not only that, but it would take quite a bit of people to bring him down and so anyone who would be willing to try to take down the shooter would likely realize that they'll just be adding to the body count. There is no shame in staying put when you're relatively safe, especially if by rushing the shooter you might leave others vulnerable (by unblocking and opening the door).
