X-Box vs PS2

I just got an email from microsoft and I thought you might like to see a comparison between the 2 as seen by microsoft.

I think x-box wil fail. Thet thing is basicaly a pc in a box. What about Gamecube???? Playstation 2 sucks because it's too hard to program for and everyone knows they will lose developpers in the long run.

The X-Box will certainly be a beast of a machine but I don't think it will turn out as fast as they are hyping. 150mill polygons!????!! I won't be holding my breathe.

Anyone that calls Xbox, a PC in a box, or a dumbed down PC, or whatever doesn't understand, consoles, or game development. Xbox, won't fail, its going to have an impressive list of Xbox ONLY games, not to mention alot of the previous Sony only brands will be making their ways to Xbox. I could care less about the Japan devs, if they sign up for xbox, so be it, if they don't no biggie. Its time for the American developers to shine IMHO. Xbox will bring alot of firsts to the console arena. About the 150million polys/sec its feasible, with enough R&D money, anything is possible. Using that 150million polys/sec to full effect will be the challenge, something a PC game won't be doing for quite awhile, even when cards for PCs are capable of it. Xbox also means better PC games too.

WEll i don't think it's a fair comparision since X-box is gonna be released much later. I mean PS2 is already out in Japan. So of course X-box will seem more advanced cuz microsoft's had more time.

It is using a basic kernel of Win2k.

Before you freak out, realize the Dreamcast runs on a kernel of WINDOWS CE. If you think the Win2k Kernel is not 50x better, you are blind.

The only thing wrong with that newsletter is the processor comparison. The 733mhz Intel will not keep up with the Emotion Engine, period.

First off, XBox will NOT do 150 mil pps with any effects on whatsoever.

Like someone else said, its coming out next year, and on top of that, its a M$ product, so therefore it will be delayed at least once.

X-Box was developed for one reason. To allow developers to continue to make PC level games that eliminate the months of testing and debugging that goes with trying to make a game work with a zillion different hardware. With the hardware narrowed down, it will allow a developer to turn out games alot more quickly and alot less buggier. I think X-Box will be all the gaming of a PC without the cost and bugs of a PC. Hell hook up a monitor/keyboar/mouse to the X-Box and you can play all current modern games including RTS and FPS. Problem will come because the hardware will be outdated in a year but as the PSX shows, good content can keep a platform alive.

Hmm, this depends on what you will be using the kernel for, if it's for an OS for a server or a workstation or even a heavily loaded Desktop, i would agree. But for Game consoles??

The kernel of Windows CE is smaller, faster and very reliable if you use it in a game console.

Oh, BTW, i really think that the Xbox will fail, and PS2 will continue the great success of the PS.

I'll be watching to see if Xbox titles are more or less stable than PC titles. In theory the hardware is constant but we're still dealing with DirectX right? Plus I've yet to see a modern PC game release without core design bugs.

In any case, I don't see many PC users moving toward the Xbox. What can it do that my PC next year can't? Xbox games are not compatable with PCs, so if the games I want are only available for the Xbox well then I'll re-evaluate. But even then if I can't connect an Xbox to my hi-res/hi-refresh monitor why bother?

Again, i push -- KERNEL. Win2k has all kinds of memory capabilities, and you will not see problems from &quot;bloat&quot; because it is so streamlined. The Windows2k kernel alone is very powerful and will be a perfect fit for the Xbox.



My only worry about the Xbox is memory bandwidth. 150million triangles (without any effects, 100 with full effects) is going to eat a lot of bandwidth, and the Xbox doesnt seem to have it. I need help with the math, though...

PS2 is gonna be a failure due to the fact that games win the console wars and Sony just doen't have enough exclusives. The real competition will be between the X-Box and the Gamecube and unless Zelda appears on the X=Box I aint getting it.

Unless Microsoft can get the support of the big Japanese game developers, it will never overtake Japanese console makers(SEGA, Sony, Nintendo). It has been that way for every american developed console.

I think the envestmant that microsoft has made to this X-box and the fact they sent me the Email(I am in the system builder program) shows they are committed to bringing this to market. I also think those same people who brought you such good titles as Wing Commander, UT,Doom,Quake and many more now have a platform to design for that allows them more freedom of artistic talent. With the ability to write on DVD and store on large harddrives and as well play on line tells me microsoft intends to be a major contendor for the gamers dollar.Those that would doubt thier resolve should remember what happened to netscape. If MS wants to play,they will do it all the way. This X-box WILL be developed. I do not speak to the delivery schedule or the bug issue,because I think this is a different group of people and they have the luxery of taking thier time to do it right. Of course the Japenese machines are going to be there,but I would bet the Japenese are going to be some of the best marketers of this machine and a good percentage will be sold there. That's a guess,but calculated on that market's love for home entertainment. Not alot of places to go to in Japan(maybe a pachinko parlor).
