Oh man, I'm torn between starting up an X Reblance Mod or that X-Tension one. Have you tried both Mark?

Well, this is super disappointing. I was hoping the impressions here would be a bit more positive than the (god-awful) reviews on Metacritic, but the complaints seem to be mostly the same.

I'm really glad I didn't pre-order. Maybe in a few more months they'll patch out some of the headaches.

On the plus-side, since I was hankering for a space game I saw that Kerbal Space Program released a big patch last month, which vastly improved the game play. I picked that up over the weekend and am having a blast launching rockets

While the bugs that are breaking the game can be fixed the problems with the game is more fundamental than just technical issues. I highly doubt they can fix it with some patches, its just too far away from well thought out game mechanics. The game is rubbish, you'll never want to buy it.

Agreed. The feedback on the xuniverse forums is identical to what you're reading here. The problem is that the awful mechanics and design decisions have completely alienated the long-standing X-series fanbase, and yet the implementation of the new approach is so bad that it is unlikely to find any converts to create a new fanbase from. It reminds me of the situation with "Sid Meiers' Railroads" from Firaxis, although that title was _much_ more polished than X: Rebirth. You had a similarly loyal community, excited by what they heard, and then completely deflated by the crap that was delivered.

Btw, I decided to bail on the X Tended mod for X3, at least for now. I'm going to console myself with a vanilla campaign running some enhancements mods, and dream of some future space sim.

This is the game that's going to occupy my time spent waiting for Star Citizen.

Quoting myself because of how epicly bad this game is. Terrible performance, terrible presentation (animations, voices, etc.), and terrible game play.

Let's say it all together, one more time, slowly....

"In this digital age there is no reason to pre-order anymore, ever".

I remember when I was young and finished Tomb Raider, and went to a game store to find a similar game (I was so addicted). To my utter surprise and delight Tomb raider 2 signs were up everywhere, and the clerk told me that many people had already ordered it; if I didn't I might have to wait a few weeks to get the game (maybe a lie, maybe not). I got a bunch of extras for pre-ordering, including a life-size cardboard stand-up of Lara that I still have in the original plastic and might throw on ebay some day.

That was pre-ordering done right.

What happened with X Tended?

Nothing negative, really. It loaded and ran fine, but the overhaul of the universe is done in such a way that it is really a continuation of the story in X3:TC and AP, and there are not really any newbie missions. I haven't played the game in nearly three years, so I needed a gentler ramp up than that. So I reverted back to vanilla and now I am decided what mods I want to install.

I was thinking that X: Rebirth was going to be my game into the X universe. Sounds like I should miss it. So, if I am new to the X universe what game would you recommend I play?

Just go with X3: TC or AP.

I think I will still try Rebirth at some point--It was going to be a long time, anyway. after patches and sales. Hopefully there will be packs that fix whatever these problems are with mechanics. But you guys say that probably isn't possible....

Then again, it could all be an issue of taste. Civ 5 was roundly panned at release and while it seems to have gotten much better with xpacks, I think there is still a loyal contingent that really likes Vanilla.

-10% off retail price or free upcomming DLC is as good of a reason as any other.

I sure wish it would have been. I'd have ruined that thing.

If you're considering paying full price for a game and it turns out to be good it's worth supporting at full price anyway. If it sucks a 10% discount doesn't help anything.

The sad thing is it looks just so darn pretty, there's a LOT of attention to detail with the space stations and ships.

It's just completely unplayable as a game.

I agree that it does look nice... except for the cockpit textures and the NPCs and those glowing green galactic Habbitrail tubes snaking all over.

You think? I've recently started up a playthrough of TC, and it's a lot harder on newbies then Reunion was. The plot kind of tosses you into the thick of it, and you've got 2 big problems: The only enemies you can fight reliably without pissing off a major race are pirates and Xenon. But in TC, the Xenon get those damned PBEs, and the pirates get PBGs. Both are death sentences in a light fighter, and even in a well armed M3 you better know what you're doing.

well, I only recommended it because TC is the only one I know..I think it's TC? maybe it was Reunion?

Anyway, played that one, had no idea wtf to do for a long time, read some in-depth tips and strategy on line, and went to it.

I think I've logged 90 hours into it...and couldn't put it down back when I was playing it. I never even started the story...

Well, this thread inspired me. Got X3: Reunion on Steam, started playing last night. I had purchased it on CD years ago, but it got in the way of me playing EVE and the controls were weird, so I gave up after a few minutes and have no idea where the CDs are now.

(I had an EVE problem.)

I could see myself losing some hours on this. The graphics are alright, even for a game the old. And it seems like a pretty big universe / economy.

I wonder if the game has any hope in mods? Any indication of how moddable the game is?

I guess I might as well try it at some point, I did pre-order it after all. Sigh...

Apparently, A Nexus for Rebirth just opened, but I think X has it's own dedicated mod community in their forums?
