OMFG why did you buy an X1800XT

jk

anyway...with .net use 2.0 as that is very friendly on the drivers...you will still need 1.1 but with 2.0 things run smother for the drivers.

Well, I installed .NET 2.0. and everything runs the same.

I also tried the CCP drivers apoppin linked to, and they don't support the new features in the X1k series.

looks like the fear.exe thing is back. oh well. this is really bizzare though, someone should ask ati about this.
Uh, the benchmark scores are the same between runs. The difference in minimum is probably just noise from caching.

Question before I do though... I haven't messed around with the CCC before and I'm a bit fuzzy on the Overdrive thing.

This is a screenshot of my overdrive screen...

http://www.mindspring.com/~megatron/overdrive.JPG

You'll notice that the clocks for both core/mem are below the spec for this card for the current speeds. These don't change when I fire up rthdribl... Anyone know anything about this?

I think Overdrive is bugged. On my X1800 XL, the clocks are 5MHz below spec according to Overdrive. Increasing the memory frequency at all results in a green screen and reboot, while core increases work fine. I sent a report to ATI, suggest you do the same.

the x1800XT is a better card than a 7800GT, IMHO

It would be TOUGH to decide between a XT and a GTX, probably rather lean toward the XT *except* i'd find good reason that i need SM3.0 now. As said it's a bit tough.

But claiming its a waste of money to get a XT over a GT is just a sign of pure ignorance.

Already tried that. ATI Tray Tools won't start. It doesn't appear to recognize the card.

The X1k series supprts SM3.0.

According to Nitros numbers, the only difference is in the minimum.

I finally installed my x1800xt over this weekend.

There is definately an IQ boost over the my x800xt pe. The colors look a lot richer and deeper. You notice that right away. HQ AF is also just a noticeable especially with games that have far drawing distances. Playing Lost Coast for example, the detail of objects way back in the backgroud is very high. There is a level of crispness that make my x800xt pe image a bit blurry almost. Not sure it it's the AAA or HQ AF responsible for that.

The performance hit between, 4xAA and 6xAA is minimal. Use 6xAA! I am quite pleased it it. BF2 looks a lot different with all settings on high and AA turned up. CS:S can be maxed out at 1920x1200 and no drops in major fights/smoke, etc.... The stress test gives me 105 with 6xAAA, 16xHQAF at 1920x1200, AI high. I'm very happy with that.

Comparing to my friends Evga 7800GTX KO, his comments were that everything looks "very clean and colors looks better." For $499, I'm quite happy with it!

I got a deal from www.citrusmicro.com I had a MSI 7800GTX 512 on order with them but MSI told him not to wait up for another shipment anytime soon. So instead of having to wait endlessly for a 7800GTX 512, he offered me a built by ATI x1800xt retail for $499. I couldn't say no and I'm glad I got it. For the games I play, (CS:S and BF2) it does the job and looks great doing it. I'm quite happy with it. Look at the price guide on the front page. You can find a retail one for about $550ish or an OEM for about $500ish which isn't too bad at all.

I also switched cases. Went from a Raidmax Scorpio to a Thermaltake Kandalf and noise hasn't been an issue what so ever.

I think that's a fair assessment.

Edit: and a decent price on that card.

Are you using temporal as well?

No. Either standard AA or Adaptive AA. Temporal any good? I'm not sure exactly what it does.

Temporal is only useful if you use vsync.

Cool, thanks. I don't use vsync.

I am planing a move to a larger screen and I was wondering what screen you game on. I would love to see what the new part from ATi is capable of doing at high res. I don't think the 7800gt will cut it on a 2405fpw and i don't like sli at the moment.

I don?t know what?s wrong with all you guys I play ALL my games at 1920x1200rez on FEAR, Quake4, COD2, HL2 no problems on a X800GTO Overclocked to 625/620

You must have pretty badly tweaked pc?s

I've got the Cat 5.12 and the latest version of ATI Tray Tools from guru3d. Says it can't read the BIOS info and fails at launch.

Even the included readme says that is supports the X1000's. Odd... CCC works fine, I'll just stick with that.

You must have incredibly low image quality standards, or you aren't running FEAR at your monitor's native resolution.

when i see stupid posts like yours it makes me thankful for sites that actually run benchmarks. you know the old saying about opinions and thats why most of us like facts. for fear and cod2 you are playing at resolutions that a 7800gtx has difficulty getting good fps. you must be playing with EVERY setting on low. according to Firingsquad even an x850xt pe only gets 15 fps at 1600x1200 with 4aa/8af and 24 fps with NO aa/af. i assume the 850xt pe is better than or equal to your overclocked x800gto. fear and cod2 would hardly be playable at 1920x1200. i think you are just trying to start crap.

CCC isn't bad at all. Try it out before knocking it. Also, you can just right click on the ATI taskbar icon and do most of the CCC options from there (similar to ATI tools).

I ran FEAR on an X850XT PE @ 620/620, and it wasn borderline playable at 1680X1050, no AA, 16X AF (no soft shadows).

Either you have details cranked way down, or you have an enviable toleration for extremely low framerates. If your details are anywhere close to maximum, you can't be getting more than 10-15fps for your average (I forget the exact numbers but I was getting between 15-30 fps on 1680X1050). That was while using an A64 @ 2.5 Ghz, hardly a slouch of a PC.
