X1900 = X1800 Killer?

I've heard around the forums that once the X1900 series comes out, "ATI might discontinue X1800's". Is this just an assumption or official news? I'd really hate to see that me wonderful X1800XT is discontinued.

Meh, it's no different than the 7800GTX phantom edition being discontinued next spring (or so i've heard)...

I look at the arrival of the X1900 as a good thing, since it will hopefully lower the prices of the X1800s/7800s

Yeah same, but don't you "loose" something on your card when it's discontinued? And besides, I still need to buy a X1800 Master Card.:|

Meh, as much as ATi has improved Crossfire, i don't think it's quite as efficient as a dual solution as SLI, due to the high prices of the Crossfire cards, & teh whole dongle thing is annoying.

I don't personally see much value to SLI or Crossfire, but if you do want two cards, i'd suggest SLI.
For a single card though, the X1800XT is certainly the best value for high end right now, since with the $50 rebate, they can be found for cheaper than the 7800GTX 256 MB :Q!

I think what KIR is getting at is that he's losing value daily as the prices on X1800XTs plummet in anticipation of the X1900s which will be superior.
Yes, the X1800XT being a worse card and discontinued will make it's value drop even further.

I knew this was going to happen, they shouldn't have even released the X1800XT. If you're one of the guys buying it NOW for $420-$450...Hurray! It's probably the best deal out there for that money.
How about the poor slobs who waited patiently for five months, then bought it for $600-$700, only to find it worth half as much three months later, and discontinued to boot?!?!?

That's the price to pay for early adoption. Even with the 7800GTX 256 MB, they were all $599 originally, & now they're $150 less.

The 7800GTX 512 MB buyers are even worse suckers, since at least with the "discontinued" X1800XT, they're getting a good value.

I am actually waiting for the X1900 so that i can buy an X1800XT for even cheaper

isn't a precipitous price drop always associated with buying high end video cards (or xbox360s, or ps2s, or mustang GT convertibles) at well above the MSRP?

and it's not like the fact that the R580 is coming shortly was a well kept secret.

of course, this is all going off topic, which is whether the x1800 will be discontinued. from all indications it looks like it will be.

Those "poor slobs" flashed their bios to a PE, and found it able to keep up with a 512MB GTX. What about those REAL poor slobs that purchased a 512 GTX for $750 when a card purchased earlier simply flashed to a new BIOS keeps up with it. Why are you so freakin' biased against ATi?!

For real, the 7800GTX (256) started out selling at $600+ and a couple of months later they dropped in price. OH NOES! THE PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT ON LAUNCH DAY ARE POOR SLOBS!

It was only 2 weeks IIRC where $50 -$100 price drops happened. It was quick.

so its even more like the x1800xt, which has been out all of 7 weeks and is down to $450.

1) I haven't seen anything 'official' saying the X1800s will be 'discontinued' or not sold anymore.

2) Both ATI and NVIDIA have replaced cards with refresh equivalents before. The RADEON 9500 and 9700 lines were replaced with the 9600 and 9800s. The NVIDIA GeForceFX 5600 and 5800 lines were replaced with the 5700 and 5900. The RADEON X600s and X800s were eventually replaced with X700s and X850s. If they come out with corresponding (and hopefully better/cheaper) X1900s and phase out the existing X1800s, it's not really that big a deal. It's not like your warranty goes away or anything like that.

3) ANYBODY buying a high-end video card should expect it to tumble in value precipitiously within 3-6 months at most. They are not generally a good investment in terms of resale value as a percentage of purchase price.

You mean they should've coasted on the X850 until February?!

It's still a 512MB card that competes with the best. I don't think it'll drop to half price so soon, but even so, we're talking tech here, not art. A card's value has nowhere to go but down. If you're thinking of reselling for a new card, well, seems you have as much public notice of a new generation as most launches, only this time the new launch is really close to the old.

Anyone thinking of investing in this or any GPU as a collector's item, heh, think again.

You're absolutely right. :disgust:

X1900 series will supposedly completely replace the X1800 series, thus being an X1800 killer in both the physical sense as well as the performance sense.

That's the price of being bleeding edge.

Seriously most of us can live with 6600GT, x800XL, and etc for the most part of this and next year. There is no reason to blow $599 every year to upgrade when new games coming out so far are not using the new stuff.

I'm not upgrading until DX10 games is out.

Whoever bought the x1800 shouldnt feel as stupid as the SOB's who bought the 512gtx at $1000 a piece on ebay, and especially the ones who already had a 256gtx and then "upgraded" to a faster gtx. That would be as dumb as upgrding from a slower AXP to a faster AXP a month before the release of A64, ecxept that the AXP's were not seling at outrageous prices. If that's not a waste of money, I dont know what is.

Basically, yes. Unless they keep the X1800 and not totally REPLACE it with the X1900; as in "trashing" the old and in with the new.

Do you always get so emotional discussing video cards?
