Sorry if this has been answered, but what exactly is the impetus from ATI/sapphire's point of view to sell $350+ parts for $200?
Is it that big a deal that they get rid of excess inventory before the r520 hits? Sounds to me like it would be counterproductive, anyway- those in the market for a high performance card would have gotten an x850xt pe for a mere $200, leaving little room for a new r520 in their system...unless the performance promised in the sell sheets is really accurate (ie, the x1800xt beating the 7800GTX by 80% in the FEAR demo, amongst other games).

I dunno, guess it sounds like a big waste- on paper, the GTO2 is the same as the x800GTO (same clocks and pipelines), so for the average PC user it would make no sense at all- a more expensive card, being exactly the same?

I'd have thought that simply pricecutting the x850xt pe range of graphics cards to around the 250ish level would have been a better idea, as there would still be the rush to buy, however EVERYONE would recognise the quality of the parts, rather than selling an absolute bargain at $200, however only a select few internet-dwelvers knowing of the potential of the card, and its true identity as an x850xt pe.

1. The main difference between GTO2 and GTO is the power connector - gives u better OC possibilities + not all GTO (like HIS ICEQ2) have the possibility to open all 16 pipes
2. The other differece is that the GTO2 (and fireblade edition) have R480 chip for sure, the other may also have the R423 and R430 - means no 16 pipes
3. As far i can remember the 800GTO series ussually posses a R480 chip which didnt pass tests for being in a X850XT (look at the 3d2005 results with GTO2 OC and standard X850XT - there is a slight difference of 500 points) and therefore would normally not go into production as X850XT, so i think that Ati made a good choice selling these as GTOs for 200$ despite the fact that it works superb when u OC it to X850XT.

It was at $199 (what I paid for it) earlier last week.

Demand probably pushed the price up.

It's a limited edition card, so I don't know how long it will last.

Yes...when unlocking the pipes no extra heat but when ocing the temp of the card will obviously rise. How much you can OC will depend on the cooling of the card as well as the airflow of your case.

if you unlock 16 the original BIOS can be had from the Techpowerup.com
article and w/ that you can flash back to 12. But keep in mind the flash does not
raise the mem/core speed it just unlocks the pipes, so the fun is up to you

no what if 15, yes 15, pipes are unlocked...does the card not work properly? can it be flashed back to 12?

Received my GTO2 from NewEgg today, and have to say I'm quite satisfied with my purchase. Here's my setup:

P4 3.2ghz 800FSB
1 gig of DDR2 PC4200 memory

3dmark2005 scores as follows:

Stock (12 pipes) x800GTO2 400/490 - 4375
Modded (16 pipes) x800GT02 400/490 - 4938

I haven't OCed the card yet, and my computer is not even optimized to run 3dmark2005. (Have Norton running in the background, various plug-ins, etc....) Great upgrade from my 6600GT card which hit about 3500 on 3dmark 2005 @ stock speeds.

I might have to pick up one more of these suckers for my other rig now too. Let me know fellas how your Zalmans/Arctics aftermarket coolers are working out for you

By unlocking 16 pipelines and overclocking, does that put a tremendous amount of strain on the card? Do I need a very good cooling system?

I put AS5 on the HS and ram chips and am using the stock cooler. I have a cheap case with only a couple fans in it and i have X800XT PE speeds (almost 560/1100). It doesnt seem to strain the card at all. Rock solid, just gets warm when I play (which all cards do).

I'm running mine at 532/618 and It gets up to about 55C while playing Dungeon Siege 2. I have AA at 4x and AF at 8x at 1280x1024. It's getting a pretty good work out.

Fan speed's cranked up to 100% though, so that's probably helping.

just ordered mine. I really hate to think about spending another $30 on a cooler though. Kind of defeats the purpose of bang for the buck budget deal. $219 from the atacom link.

You won't need one @ X850XT speeds, my temps. were fine with the stock cooler.
The only reason I put a Zalman on was that I took it off my old card.

You do not NEED to get an aftermarket cooler at all, several people around here have got x850xt-pe speeds off stock cooling, and many others are running at XT speeds. That said, many would consider a better cooler superior in both overclocking potential and reliability, though I think both those claims lack proof right now.

Don't buy it from Newegg, there are plenty of other companies that are selling the card for a lower price, although honestly it stops being such a great deal the closer it creeps to $250.

What do you mean by "plenty of other companies," because, last I knew, the only other place that was selling it and had it in stock was allstartech, who is selling it for $247. Do you think this is a good deal, btw, for ~250 bucks?

Depends what resolution you run at. Basically this card's competition is going to be a 7800gt, which is definately better. Evan at $250 for the GTO^2 and $30 for the (optional) cooler that is still $50 cheaper than the 7800GT. IF you have a 24" widecreen display then definately get the 7800GT, but if you only game at 1280x1024 or definately 1024x768 then the GTO^2 might still be a better value. (Best bet is to try to find it for $220.)
