The Far Cry developer stated that Ps3.0 offers nothing that Ps2.0 can do visually. Its just easier to do on Ps3.0.

Those expecting much better performance or visuals out of Ps3.0 will be sorely disappointed.

The 6800u chokes on Far Cry at hi-res w/aaxaf and thats mostly a Ps1.1 game.

The question really for the future is whether the XT's SM2.0 performance is higher or lower than the 6800s SM3.0 performance.

AFAIK the PE is just the BBA XT...no clock diff...link please if that's not the case?

Originally, ATI intended for a "vanilla" XT card that clocked slightly lower than the XT PE. This idea has since been dropped and all x800xt are the same now. From a manufacturing stand point, it wouldn't have been too efficient to produce two separate product runs of such minimal difference.

There's an out-dated ATI PowerPoint presentation in .pdf format that's floating around that showcases these two versions of the x800xt, so I suspect that's where all these stories of XT vs XT PE are coming from.

That does matter... because if there was a simpler faster form of code to do certain things, why not use it for the performance gain? (More hardware processing, less software)

It's the diff between ultra super uber gfx @ 23.4fps w/ SM2 or ultra super uber gfx @ 45.7fps w/ SM3

Numbers are arbitrary, but one plays the game alot better

Overall they still perform marginally better then the 6800,
of course Nvidia can do wonders with their drivers,.
Still with the power consumption and size of the card.
I'd choose ATI

there was a thread discussing this a few days ago.
With the newer driver set from NV there is roughly somehting like a 40% improvment gap between the GT (or ultra i forget) and the x800 pro....now while the 800xt is surely faster...it was speculated that it isnt gonna close that 40% gap...there may be a 10% gap after all is said and done. Besides if these new beta drivers can put a 6800GT a pretty good distance above the pro....the Ultra is gonna be even better.
Im not gonna make a full out decision as of yet till both cards are out in alot more numbers than they are with more mature drivers....... But as of right now after seeing these new drivers pop up the 6800 is looking very very tempting to me.

Ive gone with the 6800Ultra over the XT. The main reasons: Nvidia offers more in the way of tech, onboard encoding benefits , PS3.0. Its on par with the XT , and in the future will be faster. Why buy and XT , which offers nothing new to the table at all.

The Nvidia 6800Ultra, is a better purchase IMO.
