It seems like it will be a couple of years until PC's catch up to this hardware beast of an Xbox. That is just my speculation though.

I believe the release date for the xbox 360 is this coming fall.

Yeah..it only makes sense to release the damn thing after they officially showed it off.
http://xbox.gamespy.com/xbox/microsoft-xbox/609924p1.html

So the pc industry will only be at dual core and we'll have r520 if we're lucky.

Does anyone know how ATI will profit from this? It sounds like MS will have have to sell it at a loss.....Better for us though. lol

How can they pack all that advanced hardware in there and sell it for so cheap compared to PCs? Hell the Xbox 360 sells for less than the ATI R520 is going to cost, probably.

From what i have been reading. MS is going to do the same thing they did with the first xbox. Sell it at a loss to get people to buy the damn thing.

Mainly because it will more then likely not be backwards compatible. Nivida did their last graphics card and is now it is ATI. Nivida and ATI wont come to an agreement so there will be no backwards compatibility.

They will make profit off of royality fees from games or xbox live. And they'll sell the little extra things for high prices like the controllers.

yeah...I'm betting they get it off those $25,000 Windows "advanced" server things and all the poor souls who bought Windows XP Pro for $300 when it was released.

If it really sells for 300 bucks....i dont see any point in upgrading for a new video card anytime soon....

Might as well just get an xbox 360 until the pc market catches up or redefines itself.

Yeah but, Rise of nations 2 AOE3 and other such games don't work at all on consoles.

FPS's are still better on Computer.

And it look slike ATI jumped a generation in technology for Bill Gates. But... what if Nvidia is a generation ahead with the g70?

also, if it is 48 pipelines, just remember that if next gen NV and ATI are 32 and are SLI'ed then you got alot more than 48... and then there is the possibility of DUal GPU cards in SLI for a total of 4. Counting out PC's is a bad IDEA.

Amen! I'm just hoping for an Xbox mouse and keyboard for FPS so it's easier to play.

True true, but SLi rig will run at least $1 grand for 2 videocards alone. Add a fast cpu, mobo 1 gigs of ram, HDD, dvd roms etc and you are looking at 1.5 or more grand. I'd gladly sacrifice graphics quality and 200+ frames in games if xbox 360 is only $399. I 100% agree with you that PCs have no substitute for FPS and strategy games. However, the latter do not require a serious PC to run though. I ran Warcraft 3 at 1280x1024 everything on high with radeon 8500 (4 year old videocard!!!). The way I look at it, PC for FPS, strategy games and consoles for everything else. I think anyone who says consoles or PCs are better is missing the point. If you want to really enjoy games, you need to own both. PCs and consoles should live side by side based on differnet strength they provide. Last time I checked, PCs blow for sports games (lacks the atmosphere of laughing at friends when u score a goal), fighting games, action-adventure games and racing games. That means gamers who hate consoles on these forums are missing out on a lot of great games.

Err, it's not that high tech.

The chip has some other main function and is not actually memory.
NEC's eDRAM is a memory system on-die with the logic for whatever
the chip does. Finnish vaporware desktop graphics-chip designers
Bitboys Oy announced many years ago a design which used a similar
strategy with memory technology from Infineon, who were also going
to fab the chip (the "Glaze 3D"--this was in the 3DFX
Voodoo 2 era). Both the Playstation 2 and Gamecube have chips with
eDRAM. The PS2's Graphics Synthesizer has 4 MB and its logic with
48 GB/s internal bandwidth. The Gamecube's massive Flipper GPU has
3 MB of eDRAM, 2 reserve as a back framebuffer and 1 as an on-chip
texture memory cache. Flipper's eDRAM bandwidth is 10.4 GB/s for
textures and 7.6 GB/s for frame.

PS2 and Gamecube have it, although not as much.

well its got usb ports, so i guess a usb keyboard and mouse isnt out of the question...it would be fantastic if they did allow it, which i think they will

and Ati have jumped a generation for them, R520 isnt like R500. R520 will stil have the vertex shader, pixel shader set up. R500 is unified shader architecture

Every single game that sells for the XB360 MS collects a licensing fee. Doesn't matter who makes the game- they get their check. GTA3 was handled by Rockstar with Sony having pretty much nothing to do with it and they collected ~$100Million from its sales alone(ignoring VC and SA). That is the console business model.

On the PC side, hardware vendors need to make their money on the hardware, software companies realized gamers got used to paying a certain MSRP for games so they added the additional 'licensing' cost in to the price and kept the extra cash themselves(instead of paying MS/Sony/Nintendo).

Yeah I know the console is supposed to cost less than the price of a high end GPU but that's a different matter. I wish there was some way to rip out the r500 core

I personally think I will have BOTH the Xbox and the PC... then I have the best of both worlds... I mean come on.. I do NOT want to change my name to "OhioConsoleGamer" .. it just doesn't have that certain "Zing" to it...

Seriously I think as long as there is a desire to build the biggest, baddest PC on the block there will be no impact to PC market by consoles. ATI, Nvidia, and all the other manufacturers know where their bread and butter is... so does Microsoft
