I'm almost afriad to even state my opinion on this matter because of the instant flaming thats going on in both directions, but here is a video of quake 4 running on final xbox360 hardware. I think its safe to say that pc games and new console games will be nearly indistinguishable for at least a year or two.


** I realize quake 4 using a controller will be inferior by a large margin to kb+mouse, but i like the idea of kicking back in my recliner on a sunday afternoon.

edit: that is not running on final hardware, but found a preview with lower res movies on final hardware here

I know I might sound like a three year old when I say this, but "He started it". That is the fact if you read it. I am simply defending my statement and his attempts to discredit me. I have no problem with people who play consoles, but I do have a problem with people saying that consoles are superior to PC's. That is just plain false.

But seriously, express your opinions, because I will not flame you at all. If you track all my posts at AT, no flaming comes from me, unless of course someone made an attack on me first, in which case I will need to defend myself. Other than that, I have never set out to flame like he did. Anyway, sorry to everyone here that has to read this. I do that too I have a Dell 30" LCD where I have my nice office chair (Not quite a recliner, but pretty close) and just enjoy games with wireless mouse + keyboard. It is the ultimate lazy of lazy, and I love every bit of it

I wasnt trying to single you or anyone else out, but its obvious that there are very opionated posters in this thread. Like many others have stated, i also use my pc for fps's, but i cant stand to play racing or sports games on my pc. I could care less if i can get a little more resolution on pc or have a console with slightly more advanced technology. I just like to play my games.

Good point... Some of us are so concerned with technology behind it, that we fail to take the good from each genre... I am guilty of that... Anyway, thanks for the post, it reminds to just enjoy them for what they are and what they were designed for.

Clearly you don't know what a hyperbole is. But back the point... How many options are there for game console graphics? How many for the latest PC game? We're comparing the choice of a few cables to many settings that could make or break video quality and performane. Consoles games are designed to run on one system, as best as they can make it, so there's no settings needed. It was a stupid thing for you to bring up.

PS. Did you figure out how to plug in your new console? Or put the disc in the console drive? I'll wait a few hours while you figure it out...

Consoles come and go as does PC hardware.

My son who is 13 does not have any interest in PC games at this time.

Has a PS2 which he does not use and will be sold....Has a gamecube which he uses sometimes.

Has a modded XBOX which has dominated his gaming interest thanks to Halo, Halo 2 and XBOX live.

XBOX 360 is a must have for him and will be more cost effective than playing the PC hardware game.

XBOX 360 is kinda pricey but... Not when compared to the price of a modern video card which will be outdated in a couple of months and will just feed the upgrade urge

As far as the whole arguement goes it is pretty much pointless as they are not created to compete with one another in the first place.

If a console has the games you wanna play buy it! If it doesn't don't buy it!

It will be and always will be much easier for developers to tap the known hardware config of a console than to make games that must run on multiple configurations.

I'm not a fanboy of either the console or the PC and my opinion is mine and is not intended to sway either arguement. I don't care what you game on or who has the big bad-ass system

This is hilarious. How about you simply own the consoles and a PC? Dear Lord in Silicon heaven they are inanimate objects. Computers will do far more than consoles but consoles do one thing very, very well and that is gaming. Since the consoles have a five (and if you are Sony a delusional 10year lifespan) and the PC's are always evolving wouldn't it be logical to speculate that even if the consoles move ahead of the PC's temporalily (maybe a year) that the evolving component of the PC will move it back ahead of the cosoles for the rest of the console life?

I feel the same here. But i think the OP has done a great job promoting a flame war, just look at the topic summary: to end to all computers?. I don't think Microsoft ever intended to have the X360 replace all PCs. PCs and consoles are simply not made to compete with one another.

I think a more appropriate topic summary would be to end Sony's dominance, or just be honest and state to start a flame war. Microsoft build X360 to compete against PS3 and Nintendo Revo, so why are we focusing on comparison between PC and XBox, apple and orange?

Claiming the new gen console will end PC gaming is ridiculous. As long as ppl have the need to own a PC then I think PC gaming will do just fine. It's pointless to argue which is a better gaming platform, but one thing for sure is that the console will always have a bigger gaming market than PC, but a PC will always be a more capable productivity and entertainment system.

Like some have mentioned, you can do a lot of productivity work on your PC, but they forget to mention its entertainment value. Web browsing, instant messaging, d/l, play and encode all kinds of media files, console emulators, creating websites, just to name a few.

From a personal perspective, as long as I own a PC, I would spend a few extra hundreds to make it a decent gaming PC. If I have lots time to play games then I would definately own a console as well. Unfortunately I don't have lots gaming time, and my favorite games happen to be on PC platform, and last gen console graphics on low-res TV was a bit of turn-off, I primarily game on PC, except for some occational portable gaming on my PSP and GBA. I think if you are looting for either the death of PC gaming or the death of console gaming you are a short-sighted evil gamer.

PC won't die as a gaming plataform, without the PC the consoles won't have anything, let me see the PS3 GPU is a modified 7800 (created for the PC) and the ATI chip of Xbox 360 is just a result of years of development of GPUs for the PC.
Read, oh a good article from THG!, and even the CPU is based on a desktop computer CPU: PPC, also the developing of memory technologies comes from the PC developers.

From my time spent on this board I have been lead to believe that there are indeed many such people in both camps.

7 Cell SPEs each running at 3.2GHZ with 256KB of local memory will do a LOT of physics calculations - that is where IBM, SONY and Toshiba hit it right I think, while future games will rely HEAVILY on realtime physics.
