Xbox live and Netflix

I was thinking about getting a second xbox for the bedroom, so that i have a device that i can watch netflix on, with a dvd drive if i want it, and then in a pinch could use as a gaming device if i had a group of people over and wanted to have a system link game.

But then i thought about it...you need to be logged in with xbox live gold for netflix, don't you? That means i'd have to either a) only use one xbox for netflix or b ) keep moving my gamertag by changing the harddrive or buying a memory card.

Is that really the way it works? That seems...so freakin dumb.

Yes, that's the way it works.

If you use multiple Xboxes, you would put your Gamertag on a thumb drive or memory device anyway, so it's not a big deal.

Any USB drive will work now. However 16gb is the max for usb devices. I personally use a 1gb stick.

Yep, I have an old 512MB stick that I use for this. And I still have an old 64MB "memory card" that my wife uses for her Gamertag.

Why not get a PS3 for the living room and move the Xbox to the bedroom? Or vice versa, but if you have an HDTV you get Blu-ray too and don't have to pay (extra) to get Netflix on the PS3.

From what I've seen, your Netflix stuff is also tied to the profile on the PS3 as well. Netflix also has a built in limit on how many devices can access one account, so you may be fighting with that eventually.

I assume that all of his games are for xbox360. Getting a PS3 would require him to get another copy of the game or not being able to use it as an extra gaming machine. He also wants the ability to use it as a system link game machine.

Get the low-end Roku if you want a Netflix box for the bedroom. My second Xbox is in my bedroom but I have every intention of replacing it with a Roku once the Gold membership runs out.

Only bummer is that the newer 360s can't use the memory cards .

I'd actually like to find a very small memory card to store my profile on. Small referring to its physical size, so it doesn't stick out far out of the 360. I'm more worried about me doing something dumb and breaking it .

Wow, that's pretty darn small. I was just thinking that I'd prefer it not to stick out further than an inch... preferably smaller than that if possible. I have a few thumb drives, but none of them would meet that requirement.

I'd also have to worry that the 360 would actually allow them to be used. I think it yelled at me about my Kingston thumb drive saying it was "kinda slow."

The limit is 6 devices at a time, so most people will never approach the limit. I have s PS3, two 360s, and one PC registered for streaming.

Consider this -- you can get the Panasonic DMP-BD65 blu ray player, with Netflix built-in, for under $120. HH Gregg had it for under $100 a couple of weeks ago. With the price increase for Live and the fact you'd also be getting a blu ray player and access to several online streaming sources, pay back is pretty quick.

You have to be logged in to a gold live account at all times to use Netflix. You can't just log in once and be done because Live knows which system your profile is on and will only let you log in on that system. However you can keep your profile on a card, and just bring it with you and plug it into the other box. It's basically your key to Netflix, and there's only one that can exist.

No, it is barebones, meaning you can browse your queue and nothing more. That's why I would always recommend the Roku if you want a better experience. The low-end Roku isn't much more than a full year of Live Gold. If you want a better experience and a physical drive, then you can use the Xbox, but that yearly Live fee adds up.

I have a PS3 too, so not an issue. I actually like the 360 interface better than the PS3s, after the recent update.

Another option is the Wii if you are not needing full HD Netflix in the bedroom. We have ours hooked up to a 42" LCD and it's very watchable even at the lower resolution. If that is not a consideration, I would consider the Roku or PS3.

I also have a second Xbox 360 and PS3. I have my Gamertag stored on a USB thumb drive and move it back and forth. The pain is forgetting it downstairs and trying to watch something on Netflix before bed. That is the main reason why I skip using it and watch Netflix on the Wii instead.

That's probably what I'll end up doing. I've heard mixed things about the Panny's though and that the LGs are a bit better.

My concern with either of those is them not working as quickly/smoothly as i'd like, but MS made it too hard to use multiple xboxs....
