Xbox vs Playstation 2

its not gonna be a downright slaughter....if a console is to be considered a success it has to conquer the Japanese market...US sales mean nothing..look at the dreamcast..a bonafide success in NA but a miserable failure in Japan....Japan is a territory in which Microsoft is gonna have a b!tch of a time taking away interest from Sony...PS2 is gonna win the war...not by much though.

 

Thing is, if PS2 flops, I bet sony takes more of a hit then MS will.
Ill stick with my computer, why toss down on a console when I have a
1ghz pc sitting here?
I still love my modded psx.
How can you go wrong?

I'm hoping both will be solid systems....hey..it's all about the games (well...that's what common sense dictates....but I'll stop here ).


But the one thing nagging me about the X-Box so far (read so far!) is.......the games....the good news is it's about 8 months away..but seriously....if anyone thinks that Munch's Odessy is, or will become a system seller.....I've got a bridge to sell ya =) (same goes with Malice...)

Do you really, and I mean really, think it's a coincidence that the Dreamcast has had business pick up on a much, much, larger scale ever since hax0r's found a way to pirate games? The same exact thing happened to PSX a couple years ago.

My personal guess?

Within the next five months three things will happen that will seal PS2 as the #1 system for this generation:

1) More systems (duh?)
2) More games (duh?)
3) Mod chip

And the fat, emotion-engine run lady will sing....

I don't know how good the xbox will be but they are starting to market it now. I walked into the EB that my cousin works at and they have a counter display for the Xbox already. The thing was made of Neon Green Plexiglass &amp; Aluminum (this thing is not cheap). I looked at the specs but the most suprising thing was the number of annouced software houses that have signed on to develop for Xbox. On a 8X10 sheet I'd say they have 60+ developers for the thing.

Do you have any clue, Sammy? For demonstrated graphics power, the Cube has smashed the other two systems thus far. Nintendo conservatively estimates 6-12Mpolys (game environment, not 'theoretical'), but Cube developers have already reported getting 20M. The GameCube's hardware design is brilliant.

Oh wow, let's play ANOTHER incarnation of the already pathetic mario games! Oh! Maybe he'll even have texture maps! The gamecube doesn't sound all too great. i haven't read up on gamecube all that much, but mario and metroid don't seem to get me excited at all. on the other hand, xbox has acclaim, activision, infograms, midway, redstorm, sierra, and thq under their belt. metal gear for the xbox sounds promising as well. I would think that sony would do well, but i heard that the ps2 is too difficult to program for. One reason why the ps1 was a great sell was because of the games. developers had a very large library which made it much easier for them to create games. i'm beginning to think that this will be the downfall of the ps2.

Umm... I don't think so. You comparing Mhz to Mhz. Mhz doesn't mean squat when comparing console processors to PC processors (cept x box). I'd like to see a double clocked P3 beat the 300Mhz emotion engine.

Jeez.

Anywho, I think we can agree for the most part that the PS2 won't be able to compete with Xbox/Gamecube come Fall, but I still think that the Cube will come out on top. Microsoft has a ton of resources, but Nintendo's got them for experience in the gaming industry.

i think the Xbox has all the makings of a GREAT product. the off-the-shelf componenets will save time and money, the windows and DX8 based OS will make it REALLY easy to write games (compared to ps2), add in the powerful nvidia chip, HD and broadband and ESPECIALLY M$'s marketing and you have a very strong formula....heh'


one thing though, I dont actually think the Xbox is a console. Not at all, its simply a computer geared for gaming.

I believe that all those developers except Sierra have signed on with Nintendo as well, along with Capcom, Rare, and a few others worth mentioning (but I can't recall at this moment).

The fact is Gamecube and any nintendo console targets primarily for younger audiences. Sure you have the ocassional game that older people can enjoy but most of their games are aimed at kids. PSX beat up the N64 for the most part because even with inferior graphics its games were just better - at least for young adults (instead of kids). Really for most of the people on this board its between Xbox and PS2. Xbox has a more powerful system but PS2 has the sony brand and brand recognition is a great thing.

We all should know that, thats why 3dfx has continued to hang on as well as it has (hey, it should have shut up a long time ago we all know it) even when nvidia has had a superior product. Its because people believe the hype and it took nvidia longer than it should have taken to really lay the smack down on 3dfx. Xbox will threaten PS2 but in the eyes of the general blinded population I think that MS will have to do well this round, and wait for round two (PS3/xbox2) to go for the knock out...and there is no gaurantee that sony will not do some serious re-thinking and sort things out in time.

I may end up buying an Xbox but I certainly don't believe that my ps2 will be junk come later this year. It will have a big following of people and developers and MS will be just breaking into the market.

Not any more. Nintendo's starting to loosen up quite a bit. Compare Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the N64. Goldeneye would've been just as bloody as Perfect Dark if Nintendo hadn't censored it. Like I said, the Big N is aiming to reverse the mistakes of the '64 this time around.

A few of them are pre-rendered, most are not. (Even a good segment of the Rebirth video was real-time)
IGN has some footage of the X-wing gameplay hidden somewhere in that archive.
