FYI

Local Best Buy store has XFX 4890s on clearance sale at 132 bucks. Even best buy website lists them at 209 and marks them as sold out, but looks like they are clearing in-store stocks. So go check your local Best Buy, you might get lucky.

If this is one of the dreaded later ZDFC versions, then no deal. Reasons?

- crappy cooler, louder and hotter
- no cooling on ram chips and VRM
- scores worse in 3d mark vantage, performs worse in some games (FO3 and more), as low as at 4830 level

I had to promptly return mine to TD after some testing. See the hot deals section and you will find a bunch of mad people

You would be better off buying computer parts from www.ncix.com or www.canadacomputers.com than overpriced stores like BestBuy/Futureshop Canada.

What's the point of comparing videocard prices in Canada? That's peanuts. Compare TVs, cars, homes...then salaries.....just don't fall off your chair

Panasonic 65" 1080p Plasma HDTV** (TCP65S1)

Canada $4,299 - http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/...2c3d7ee60een02
US Best Buy - $2,199 - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasoni...2065&cp=1&lp=1

I think the Panny is made in Mexico, so there is no 5% import duty tax on the TV that normally applies.

Yea but they don't pay for health care.

Hehe yes we do! Nothing is free. The funds required to support "free" healthcare are raised through the following 3 sources:

1. Higher Personal Income Taxes - 2010 Combined Marginal Tax Rates (Federal + Ontario) for example are 43.41% for income between $81,941 and $127,021 and 46.41% over $127,021.
http://www.taxtips.ca/marginaltaxrates.htm

2. Health Premium Rate Chart - depends on the province. Say $50/month
http://www.rev.gov.on.ca/en/tax/healthpremium/rates.html

3. Harmonized Sales Tax on goods and services - 13% in Ontario.

You are essentially paying for healthcare through higher taxation.

I know, I am in the same boat. I am buying USD right now. Check out historical data:

1 USD : CDN exchange (annual averages from Bank of Canada)

2009 - 1.142 CDN
2008 - 1.066 CDN
2007 - 1.075 CDN
2006 - 1.134 CDN
2005 - 1.212 CDN
2004 - 1.302 CDN
2003 - 1.401 CDN
2002 - 1.570 CDN (!!!)
2001 - 1.548 CDN
2000 - 1.485 CDN
1999 - 1.486 CDN

Current rate: 1 USD = 1.019 CDN.

Move to Vancouver, best of both worlds IMO. Nice easy going Canadian livin. Plus the U.S. is like 30 miles away for all your shopping needs.

its called capitalism, not luck.
socialism means everything is more expensive.

that is a problem... I just got really excited and was going to buy one before hearing that... I guess there is a REASON why best buy is getting rid of them that cheap.

Common mistake. The vast majority DO have capital gains... its called a retirement fund, college fund, etc. Those funds invest, and that investment includes capital gains, stock market gains, etc.
Something like 250 million in the USA are subject to such gains and don't even know it.

Price differences have more to do with a historically weak Canadian dollar compared to the U.S. dollar. Now that there is no longer a disparity the retailers are just pocketing the difference rather than passing the savings on to the consumers. The same way Oil companies keep gas prices high even when the going price for crude oil goes down.

Exactly, back when the Canadian dollar was low compared to the US dollar, I was going to school in the US (2000-2004) and would go back home during the holidays. Most of the time, electronics, CDs, etc.. were cheaper in Canada than the US (except for bleeding edge stuff which comes to Canada later than the US and tends to have a higher price premium)...

Either way, I'd steer clear of those Best Buy cards.

the xfx 4890 has been on clearance for a while but at a higher price. Hardly any stores have any left.
