XFX 5770 hot as the sun

So I was pumped today, my new 5770 came in (first one shipped with a cooler that had snapped off the card).

Take it out, cool, everything looks good. I have a X58-UD5 set in a Lian Li A05. Small case and I was disappointed to find out that when I set my card in the PCIEX16_1 slot, the screw holes didn't align to well with the bracket. So needless to say I had to screw it in as best as possible.

It was still however seeded in the slot completely (although I noticed the card had some vertical wobble (even set completely in the slot).

So I power my system on, install Win7 64bit, and after 10 or so minutes with my case open, I could physically feel the heat coming off my 5770. You literally can only touch the side of the gpu cover for a couple seconds before you have to remove your finger.

I've read these don't utilize as much power so something has to be really wrong.

I currently have a ticket open with XFX but I wanted to get you guys opinion as well.

For fun I ran Windows Experience Index before taking the card out. I received a 7.5 out of 7.9 in CPU and Memory and a 1.0 in both Graphics category.

I don't think it's even recognizing my 5770, but it sure as hell is getting power.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I did not install drivers. Once I realized how hot it was getting I stopped doing anything. Can not initially disabling onboard video heat up a card like that? Thanks Zap and Mg I will try testing what you've suggested.

Once I noticed how hot it was getting I was too worried to do too much

I had a rma with xfx, they pretty good about it, nice info on rma/ticket progress except ... they sent a refurb as a replacement. still worked the refurb I mean so no problem. just beware you might not get a new as replacement. yours might just be defective, although your A05 case has little vent in the gcard area, have you had gcard overheating problem before in this case?

I have a X58-UD5 set in a Lian Li A05.

That case has wacky airflow as the motherboard is mounted with the CPU socket at the bottom. This leaves the video card at the top of the case where warm air pools. You need to either purchase the replacement top panel that includes a vent, or mod your own.

There's a very long thread on HardOCP with pics of systems that have the replacement top panel: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1133290&page=140

or did you even, um, you know, install gpu-z and see what the actual temp is? try this before rma'ing card:

1. disable onboard drivers and install amd drivers.
2. install gpu-z, rivatuner, or a similar program.
3. look at fanspeed and temps

keep in mind that 70c is too hot to touch

This. If you can touch the GPU cover for a few seconds, I don't think its getting too hot. My 4870 goes to about 70c under load and I cant touch the heatpipes and 70c is cool for a 4870.

Uh, you can't be expected to touch most video cards, even when they are running well below spec? Try actually taking the temps, then report back... =/

I can feel the heat come off my 5770 hawk at idle. Right now I have 46c at idle with the fan at 35%(card idles at 400core/1200 memory). I tried to touch the cosmetic part of the cooler that holds the fans and it's not hot at all but I can't really touch the heatsinc assembly or the pcb when its running because of dual fans and voltage read points that I don't want to put my fingers near while the card is powered on.

Install MSI afterburner and chek what your idle gpu clocks are and what the temps are.

Indeed. The only time a touch test is useful is when the HS is cold/cool, revealing that it isn't doing anything/poorly seated. Hot to the Touch is Good and means it's working as intended.

The "my card is really hot to touch" isn't much of a test. My old 7800GTX would burn you if you touched it and it was fine.

Do as bryan said. I don't believe GPU's will clock down for 2D mode unless their drivers are installed. So in windows/bios it may be loud and hot.

Even it is running hot and is going to burn out. . . so what. There isn't anything you, yourself, can really do without voiding the warranty. If the card is going to die, then its going to die, either way you'll RMA it.

The exhaust heat off my 2 5870s at full load is almost enough to burn if I leave my finger at the exhaust vent for more than a couple seconds, you don't wanna see what the backplate does to your fingers at full load (might need an ointment). I have to let my comp sit and cool for 5 minutes before i can safely remove the cards without burning myself. Running milkyway at home on 4 5870s is enough to heat a medium sized family room with an 8-9 foot ceiling in the winter lmao
