XFX 8800GT 256 version at newegg

For people interested in the 256MB version, newegg just posted a couple XFX versions. I've read that today EVGA was supposed to make theirs available but I haven't seen them anywhere.

I'm gonna be a bit pissed if the performance is as close between the 256 and the 512 as the 320 was with the 640 GTSs.

I looked at your link and dont see any. Are you sure you havent mistaken the "256bit" mem interface in the spec for "256mb" total mem?

That's some pretty good deals, it's sorta at the price the 512MB is at, but at least it's at stock. Aren't HD3850s roughly around the same price? It'd be safe to say that the 8800GT 256MB heartily beats the HD8350 in games.

Agreed. Makes me happy i didn't wait for the 256mb version and got the 512MB at BB for $216.99

MSRP on these was supposed to be in the $180-200 range. Newegg sells them for $210-230. How nice of them.

At least these 256MB versions seem to have new heatsink with bigger fan.

I may be wrong, and I'd expect "Crysis" to kill a 256MB card using High detail settings. Quiet a few of the latest games are not kind to cards with less than 512MB.

Screw the 256Mb edition, just get a 3870 if you don't want to shell out the $280-300 for th 512 8800GT

I think its at a usable niche in the market. I'm gaming at 1440x900 and early benchmarks I've seen show its comparable to the 512 GT at lower resolutions, which means it is the same speed or faster than a 3870, for 30 bucks less. There's another thread with the benchmark links.

"NDA, schm'DA, the Far Eastern folk might be saying at website expreview. They released a review of the new V2 8800 GTS today, as well as a Galaxy-made 8800 GT 256MB. The 256MB GT did surprisingly well in the benchmarks -- most of the time it was very close to the 8800 GT 512MB card. Even at higher resolutions the 256MB card did not not loose much ground. It also pulled ahead of both the HD 3850 and HD 3870 in most of the games. So I guess now it is just a matter of when it will actually be arriving in stores."

edit: to me it seems the same situation as the gts 320 vs. 640, and rest assured it will be running somewhere in the neighborhood of 750/1900/2000 when i get my hands on it

I'm really surprised how well this card runs without AA/AF, it's almost unbelievable.

Depending on the exact resolution and AA and AF settings I will agree, but it varies on the game.

pretty much the exact same as the 512 unless you get to ludicrous resolutions, even then the difference isn't much. what a card. get em before they're gone!

mmm... considering how price gouged it is right now my preorder from dell of a 512MB GT ends up costing the same as the 256MB from newegg... HAHAHAHA.

If I find it cheap enough I will ebay my 512MB and buy this instead.

You mean go up. People are gonna jump on this like they did with the 8800GT, the 3870 and the 3850.

and when eventually arrives you would have missed playing many games in high settings... AND you would have the geforce 9 series costing lots and lots and being needed for newer games...

But yea, SOON it probably will drop as supply increases and demand gets satiated.

which is why you get it for 210 bucks now. or you get the other for 270+. personally, i think if you're just going to get a card then the extra 60 bucks isn't really a big deal. but if you're going to be building a whole new system it all adds up.
