This is my fist build, so I'm a bit unsure of some things. I'm looking at getting the XFX GForce 6200 w/ Turbo Cache 256mb PCI-E. I'm concerned about if it will mesh well with everything else:

Athlon 64 3500+ Venice
Asus A8N-E NForce Ultra
Corsair 1GB XMS3200 Dual-Channel

I just want to make sure I'm on the right track. Nothing has been purchased yet. I could really use some help/advice.

NO.

XFX is crap.

So is PNY.

If you want a good card, I recommend:

LeadTek
eVGA
BFG Technology

Also, if you can bump your video card budget to about $200, the 6600GT is a MUCH better video card than the 6200 series.

Don't get a turbo cache. If anything, grab a regular 128bit 6200 w/128MB of memory. 256MB of memory is useless for the 6600/6200 series (unless they ever paired 256MB with a 6600GT, then that might make a small contribution).

Don't get XFX, PNY, MSI as Insomniak said. Get Leadtek or BFG. And I agree that the 6600GT is a much better buy.

what about ASUS Extreme 6600? I'm not in the know, but do hear a lot of great things about asus.

But you also said eVGA too right? Would the 128mb PCI-E work or should I look for a 256mb?

ASUS isn't bad, but the others I mentioned before are still a cut above in terms of build quality.

I hear a lot of inconsistency in ASUS video cards. Their MB's are top notch though.

That is why I'm asking you all...cause I just don't know the reputations of these companies. Can't thank you enough.

So, unless I can find the BFG at a better price...I guess I'll be getting the eVGA. But what would be better the 128mb or 256mb or does it even matter?

I had an asus 4200, fan failed on it, rma'd it. they sent me one that gave me terrible artifacts, rma'd again, that one just plane did not work.....

i gave up and bought an xfx 6800GT (wanted a bfg but this was at launch and no one had one in stock), could not be happier.

but on the flip side, this Asus a7n8x deluxe is one of the highest quality motherboards i have ever used.

Alright, from what I'm reading the 256mb version isn't as good at the 128. So, looks like I'm getting the eVGA 6600GT 128mb.

Thanks all for your input.

Do you want to game at all?

If yes, get yourself at least a 6600 GT.

BTW, XFX and PNY sucks and 256MB is useless unles the card you're getting costs over 300.

Yes, the EVGA is nice, but i prefer the MSI verison of the card, as it has a copper heatsink and it is dead silent, while the EVGA is loud.

In spite of all the XFX nay-sayers, my XFX 6600GT PCIe has been just fine and OCs nicely (see sig). Of course I do have a Zalman on it.

My XFX runs great. Most people that have problems with XFX usually have their 6600gt cards.

I have an eVGA 6600GT and I am totally satisfied with it. However it seems to run a bit hot, 51 celcius at idle, ~80 under load. Do you guys have any better numbers?

My old PC has a XFX GF4 Ti4200 128mb, and it has been serving me for ~3 yrs without any issue.

I'm not really worried about noise. Nothing can possibly be as loud at my POS emachines. (btw...not my fault for the emachine...that and the cat were all I got out of the divorce.) I have a very nice set of infinity speakers and can still hear that thing humming when I've got the speakers all the way up. lol Anyway, can't thank everyone enough for helping me along on the journey. I'm sure I'll be back.

How many people here have actually owned an XFX or PNY card. Alot of people bashing cards from something they read on an internet forum and not direct hands on experience.

Same here cept my card is a 6800 128mb agp card.

I see a few here saying XFX is crap but they don't back up what they said with any facts or experiences. I wasn't sure what kind of quality I would get from XFX but was very surprised when I got the card.

I've had an XFX 5900 and a PNY 4200. The PNY had a contact problem in its pins wherein it wouldn't seat properly in the AGP socket and fried itself in a couple weeks. PNY refused to RMA, saying it was my fault. Thanks guys, you're off the list. The XFX came, worked fine for about two months, then started artifacting at stock - never been OCed, never BIOS modded, nothing. Pine (XFX parent company) offered a replacement, I said no thanks and went to eVGA. Never had a problem with them, nor with my current LeadTek.

I've owned both, I wouldn't even spit in their direction these days.
