If I wanted to "hack" >IE8 to work with XP, I would also consider that in order for it to be a worthwhile exercise, I would need to be able to check that it's doing just about everything correctly afterwards (including say encryption), let alone the fact that I may as well be in the same fix to begin with if I can't (reasonably) easily apply security patches to it.

Alternatively, installing FF, Safari or Chrome is a million times easier and is supported by people who know a heck of a lot more about browsers than I do.

If you want to do dual booting for the first time, I would strongly recommend that you back up your data first.

If you download and rip the install ISO then boot off it, it will give you the option running the OS directly off CD to play with (without having to risk your current OS setup).

Chart means nothing,Win8/8.1 is upgradable to Win10 for free(providing you upgrade within the first year when it is released),so life span far superior to XP which is already dead,remember Win8.1 support ends in 2023,throw in free upgrade to 10 which adds 3+ more years and you see it's a very long term life span.



In fact you are better off using Linux if you want a free upgrade from XP providing you can get the Linux software you need to replace Windows counterpart.


Bottom line for the average home user there is no real reason not to replace XP with newer OS either Linux or Windows.

Remember from Win7 onwards you can get Win10 for free this year.


I always find it ironic when some users spend lots of money on PC hardware but when it comes to an OS which is cheap or free they hang on to a dead OS like XP,figure that one out.

You can use what you like but don't expect any solutions or hacks that can fix a dead OS,I don't even use IE on my latest OS,FF user myself but that is my choice, it's also officially supported and latest version.

When you try to use hacks or band aid on dead OS you will get more problems in the long run,end of the day better off to choose a later/newer supported OS of your choice rather then a dead OS with poor hacks etc..


I understand your thread but to me it's really pointless when XP is officially dead,especially when you can be better off with newer OS of your choosing.

If you simply don't want to see the "upgrade your browser!" warnings, while using IE8, look for some kind of User-Agent switcher add-on, or registry edit. Then set it to IE11 on Win7 or something.

I wish we could use IE7 or 8 at work. That's the versions that have tabbed browsing right? Mind you most things do work in Firefox so we mostly use that, but lot of corporate web pages only work in IE6.

For home, there's absolutely no reason to use IE. Use something better.
