hey all,
tryin to figure out the difference between oem and retail! can anyone explain the difference between the two and is it a good idea to upgrade to xp from the me edition?thanks

no difference except price (and oem you'll usually have to buy w/ hardware, usually an hdd, or something else pricey that indicates new computer... not sure how strict most places are on this though)

and you will regret it if you do not do a fresh install

Your money is the difference , as well as support from microsoft, but if you can serch on the web go OEM and save some cash. newegg.com will treat you right if you choose oem software.

Beyond support, the licence terms for OEM builds is different from retail builds. Generally the OEM builds are non-transferable from the equipment that the licence was supplied with.

It can be bought without any HW at all at Eagle Computer. Nowhere on their site will you find any mention of this "requirement".

The legal onus is on you - when you accept the licence terms during installation you entered into a legally binding agreement.

Vendors have to make reasonable efforts to ensure that licences aren't mischannelled e.g. selling student edition to big business. That is terms of their distribution agreement. Most usually cover their asses by having smallprint to the effectively waive all responsibility for ensuring that licences you buy are appropriate for you. i.e. if you breach the agreement - it's you not them who gets it in the neck.

By installing an OEM licence you agree to comply with the terms of user agreement.

I'll see if I've got a copy of an OEM licence somewhere - here's an interesting discussion on the issue anyway.

Great price and I actually needed the xtra connector a
couple of weeks later.
