Q. Is Remote Desktop available on Windows XP Home Edition?

A. No, however you can upgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional to get Remote Desktop. You can use Windows XP Home Edition as the client for accessing your Windows XP Professional computer running Remote Desktop.

I just pulled that off of the Microsoft site. No idea how to do it. If it works over your lan, then it should work over your WAN, what error do you get? Also, you might want to give some config info about your WAN.

The key is XP PRO MUST be on the computer you want to access.

I think this is how it works:

Requirements for Remote Desktop:
· Windows XP Professional installed on your office computer, or whichever computer you plan to operate remotely. This computer is known as the host.

· A remote computer running Windows 95 or a more recent version of Windows. This computer is known as the client and it must have the Remote Desktop Connection client software installed.

· A connection to the Internet, on both host and client. This can be a dial-up connection, DSL, or Cable Internet access. A broadband (cable or DSL) Internet connection improves performance, but it is not necessary because Remote Desktop transfers only the minimal data (such as display data and keyboard data) to remotely control your host computer. Therefore, even low?bandwidth (dial-up) Internet connections allow you to remotely control your office computer.

Depends on what you are trying to do. Pc anywhere. Gotomypc. You can even use msn messenger and share desktops. You might want to post a diffferent thread for "best remote access software".

johnjkr1 If I read this post correctly CYRAX is trying to use timbuktu, which is a program like pcanywhere, to connect to an XP Home PC. He wasn't refering to XP's remote desktop, at least I don't think he was. That may causing some confusion.

CYRAX if the PC you are trying to connect to is behind a router you may have to forward ports on the router to the Lan IP of that PC for it to work.

I have used real VNC, it's free, before but not over a wan only on my lan. Right now I use windows remote desktop to connect to my step daughters windows XP Pro machine. Best advice i can give you is to go over the instructions for timbuktu to be sure it doesn't work with XP home. If it does work with XP home then it's probabaly a configuration setting problem. Is the target PC behind a router and or firewall?

Ugh. Buyware? TightVNC or Terminal Services is the only way to go, though TS probably wouldn't work in XP Home.

Also, to the OP: Remote Desktop != Timbuktu...it's a separate feature offered on XP Pro. It's confusing because Remote Desktop is both a specific piece of software and a general thing that you can do using a number of different pieces of software (Timbuktu, VNC, TSC, PC Anywhere, etc)
