>>><FONT size=1>Well Microsoft did even better. Their proprietary software (which plenty of people admit to being hypocrites about) has 93-95% of the market. <<<

If millions of persons and companies are using the Microsoft OS and software we have one of two choices to think about.

1) Most persons/companies running computers with Windows installed are very smart persons.

2) They are dumb and to stupid to know better.

Proprietary to me means one company controls the OS and controls the manufacture of the computer. That is what I call proprietary. When hundreds of computer manufacturers around the world build Windows compatible computers and it works I do not call that proprietary as MS does not in any way force only one manufacturer to build compatible computers.

Plus the many software manufacturers who are creating very good Windows compatible productivity software.

Apple's OS is Open Source. I can run other OSes on my iBook. Not all that proprietary I guess

<< Sounds like bashing to me. I have XP installed and it runs all of my programs perfectly. I do not play games as I leave that to the children

If you had a clue, you'd realize I wasn't bashing XP. XP and the whole line of NT OSes are decent, I was taking a jab at the fact that you seem to come from running Win9X and are amazed at how stable XP is compared to it.

If he had a clue he would have responded to you instead of butchering BingBongWongFooey/b]'s nick yet AGAIN.

wow this post is still crankin? LOL I thought I told all you linux gurus to go play in the terminal! I knew this was going to turn into a flamewar! Well what we have learned through out this post is that Xp takes some customizing to get running smooth! Right? So on the hand who cares if you cant handle customizing a simple point and click OS then you might as well give up on PC's! Once Win XP is customized it runs great it does very well with memory management the GUI is great (custimizable I might Add) Gaming is by far better than 9x os's and X and linux unix etc.. and by far blows away 2000! So on this note I will keep my gaming surfing etc... machine XP and leave my second 9x linux dual boot. I would love to just buy a Mac to just play around with, I might just get one of those labtops! But first I need lots of money OK! Please send some!

WinXP runs great if you`ve the right hardware etc,ie plenty of ram like I do . There will always be different opinions on best this & that etc, as long as your OS is stable and runs fine(whatever OS it may be) who cares what others think , I`m off to CS now for more T butt kicking with my WinXP .

<< I recently put Win2k on my system. It's not flashy like WinXP, but it's a heckuva lot less annoying IMO. It does it's job reliably and that's what I want from my desktop. Granted, I haven't spent too much time with WinXP, but I'm not too thrilled with it. If I were to build another desktop, I would definitely run Win2k on it.

Linux is great too, especially for a free os.
>>

i agree win2k rocks windows xp. but i have both, and i feel bad not using xp if i have it...:'( im a version freak. sure win2k isnt flashy like xp, but im not afraid to say it hasnt given me even close the amount of headache xp has. im reformatting xp again at this moment on my other computer lol. but im not saying it sucks, its still a beautiful OS, im just saying my preference for effeciency is win 2k. definately.

<< We have been using & testing it since it was whistler, there are still problems with XP to watch if you are new to it, it has compatibility issues w/some other software that may be fine on your friends system with XP but it may crash your system permanently or just cause your system to reboot when you click shutdown. 2 i know are quirky EZ CD creator5.XX even the newest version will work in some & crash others upon install, Adobe Acrobat4 full seems to cause the reboot issue as well, the newer acrobat5 full works sweet.
im getting lazy so i been using for the same reason
Good luck
>>

Let me get this straight... you're blaming MS for crashes caused by Adaptec's and Adobe's drivers?

Bingbong,

I say fooey on OS X. Just having a bit of fun with your bogus name is all. I have Win XP installed and it is running great first try on my AMD 750 MHz Athlon computer.

The only problem I have had so far in XP was with WierdPerfect version 9 (2000) It froze on me when I dragged a photo from page two to page one. No big deal as with WPW frozen in the background I was running WordStar for Windows 2.0 word processor and writing and completing a complicated document. When finished I checked on WPW9 and it was still frozen. Clicked on the X and it went away. No problem at all for Win XP as it is still running perfectly two hours later.

In WSW2 I dragged photos from page two to page one multiple times with NO problems at all. Me happy.

I say cudos to M$. I am installing XP as we speak. I got sick and tired of all the hastle's, so I formatted my HDD and am installing good 'ol XP. I had been previously been dual booting 2k and Nix. No more! My beef with Nix was that I was getting sick of having a nice OS, but no sound. Whereas my beef with 2k was that I had all my multimedia functions, but the OS was getting boring....
So here I am, 20 minutes left on installing XP on my 500 cellery w/ 384MB of RAM. After that is done, I will transfer all of my mp3's, avi's and mpg's over the network from my 2k box, to my new XP box. Freeing up my xp1700+ w/ 256mb DDR for a real OS

Out of all the Windows versions I use or have used, WinXP has been the best. Hands down.

But I guess an O/S is like many other things in life, it's a matter of personal taste.

All the people dissing whatever in the course of daily life, IMHO are just naturaly negative people and would complain about how blue the sky is if given the chance.

You are allowed to "not like" something but there is a difference in giving your opinion and putting it down.

Id have to disagree. WinXP seems to have major hardware compatibility issues with VIA. even though they include 4in1drivers with the OS.

I got tired of fighting with it and reinstalled Win2K pro. runs like a charm. no lockups. no 10 minute activation process.

Im going to stick with Win2k untill they release a service pack, or I hear they have fixed some issues like screwy IDE handling. WinXp would be great if I had an intel board im sure. I may even try it if I get a Ali board. But a quick glance at any Winxp/VIA message board will show you a legion of people with horror storries with winxp and VIA. although I am aware some VIA owners have no problems at all.

VIA sucks bad, they're the only hardware company that could release a IDE chipset with DMA problems that can corrupt hard drives and release software drivers to work around the problem instead of fixing the hardware, and still have people buy their hardware.

ive disabled as many services as i can on my XP box (themes being hte big one). turned off all the transition effects. and done everything else i can think off (of course this stupid little linux user isnt as smart as you XP/AOL gods).

like i said before, XP is still a memory hog. it runs about 25mb heavier on fresh reboot then win2k pro. after about 2 days of light use, the memory usage is idling around 120mb whereas win2k was around 80mb. and that is with NOTHING running. memory leaks anyone?

xp's themes are total crap (i know u can disable them and i do), the autoupdate feature readjusts my settings after every patch (of course theres gonna be plenty of patching its windows). specifically, i disable messenger in my registry and windows update feels the need to undo my changes.

not to rant or anything, but the registry is a horrible way to store system information.

services.msc is decent for managing services.

but i would not say XP is awesome. not by a long shot.

windows 2k was a good step in the right direction. a fairly basic, fairly reliable, and free from most of microsofts crap. then they decided to push XP down consumers throat. blah.

as far as freebsd (or openbsd) for that matter, i prefer linux. generally on linux, you can get more of the latest software (bsd's are the valid tried-and-true philosopy, which is cool with me for servers). i like bsd ports system, but gentoo linux has a ports-like system that im very happy with. im not bashing BSD in general, my personal taste lends me to favor linux while still respecting bsd.

<FONT size=1>I had a very stable Win ME installed before I installed XP over ME. What I am more surprised about in XP is that it does not seem to have a resources problem. I can run many programs during the day and quit and open them again without worrying I am going to run out of resources.

Another surprise is how fast XP loads on my system when booting up. I thought ME loaded fast but XP is faster.

Other than that running XP is about the same as running ME was for me. The old saying is how much more stable can stable be?

johnlog, how many posts will it take you to realize that HTML tags don't work on this forum?

And you still never responded to any of my points, other than picking one at, seemingly, random and saying it was bashing.
