the only devices I have seen with no built-in winxp support are generic modems, which can be a pain

but it is nice not having to worry about nic/scsi drivers and being able to hear the startup sound and view windows in full color on first boot.

Hay linux is alright but for a desktop computer ( surfing the net and playing games banking etc.......) windows by far leaves linux in the dust, and windows XP is the best option out there right now! So BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA go play in the terminal already!

That's why I have a PS/2 and a friend with all the rest of the consoles, the only PC game I really play is q3.

And I know there's a lot of PC gamers, but I still think it's stupid to buy a PC just for gaming.

I have to agree with that. But as far as Windows is concerned, XP is a great enhancement of the Win2k base. Not as big of a leap as 3.1 to 95, but still significant.

If you have an Audigy card you gotta download new drivers to get it to work.
Atleast I did. Other than that XP is oh so sweet so far.

I had no problem with Audigy and WinXP it worked from the start, anyway I`ve to agree XP is probably the best OS Microsoft have released so far,I`m real happy all my favourite games work fine in WinXP as well.

i use xp for my gaming box. but im certainly not impressed with it. windows 2000 was a good product, very reliable (for windows) and a good step in the right direction. but xp is trash, it reconfigures your preference after every update (no microsoft, i wont run MS Messenger). im realy thinking about downgrading to win2k.

ohh, xp screws up mouse acceleration for games.

With the speed of computers these days, i dont think a whole lot is being sacrificed. Heck, i'm only on a P3 and i don't mind it at all

I've tried OSX and a few friends have Linux... again, i prefer XP to both for games and my daily tasks.

It was a little weird at first, but i'm used to it and i don't notice anything at all.
Anyway, as for as the PC for gaming issue goes, i don't think anyone buys a PC solely for games, but it sure is why many people upgrade and is probably one of the top 3 reasons (besides internet and maybe word processing) that people buy a PC. As for me, i'm borderline hardcore gamer, and XP is great for me.

If you think that a OS i good if it does all for you.. well.. Is it fun to sit in a car shouting.. yes.. the car drives by it self.. This is a lot of fun... Of cause.. every 10 min. I hit a great wall

Win2k, OSX, WinXP, Freebsd

For servers:
FreeBSD (only above openbsd for smp support), OpenBSD, NetBSD, OSX/Win2k (tossup, both have their advantages)

note that linux is missing on both lists.
