XP Pro vs 2000 Pro

Hi, I'm currently using W2K Pro on my home computer which I usually primarily for gaming, internet, email and other common apps. Been using it for a few years and really have no complaints to be honest. Not even sure I can say I've ever had it crash. I have a copy of XP Pro and was just wondering if it's worth upgrading to (right now). I'm getting ready to install a new (primary) hard drive and since I was going to be starting from scratch, I had thought about loading XP and wanted some thoughts on it.

I'm not looking to get into anything overly-technical, but maybe just a quick list of reasons why I should upgrade or if I should just stick to the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" cliche and keep W2K Pro? Other than most current software/hardware being designed for XP, what are the primary benefits of upgrading?

Thanks!

Differences Between XP and W2K

Personally, if you've got the hardware, I'd go ahead and upgrade to XP. I like the extra features of XP, but prefer the simplistic interface of W2K. Therefore, I've got alot of the eye candy turned off and have some services disabled, and I can't really tell much difference in system resources compared to when I was running W2K.

This is a concern I have. I'm just so used to W2K and how easy it is to use. Just wondering how difficult/easy it will be to adapt to the different interface that XP offers. Guess I'll give it a try. I can always just load XP on the new hard drive and play around with it before I install all my stuff. If I don't like it, I'll just stick with 2000.

Just change the start menu to Windows classic, then go to the themes section and select Windows classic. Voila! Looks and feels more like 2000.

Yep, that's exactly what I've done...it looks and feels just like W2K.

I've just migrated from 98se. I chose win2k sp4 over winXP. Why? In spite of what that site says, I've found no real evidence that XP is faster in anything. More importantly for me, changing 3 (IIRC) components on your system requires re-activation with XP, but not win2k. I move parts around too often to be bothered, and I'm offended that I've got to ask for "permission" from MS if I use XP.

Moving parts doesn't cause XP to request reactivation. It's if you install 3 new pieces of hardware since the last time Windows was booted.

When I say moving parts I mean installing new hardware. Like moving a vid card, or adding more ram from one rig to the other.

It won't necessarily be 3 pieces of hardware. It depends on what hardware is changed. A NIC has more weight than a stick of RAM for example.

Stick with 2000!
There is in my opinion no reason for MS to be so paranoid about what someone changes in the machine that they own. Piracy? heck you can get any OS from many places that are not legal, it only is inconvenient for the honest purchaser of the OS.

Well considering Windows XP is graphic based it takes more additional resources then Windows 2000 itself. It also has pretty much the same features as Windows 2000 except it's an easier interface + more additional tools are built in which overall save the time if you need to disable additional services which arn't needed and/or hogging ram. I'd recomend Xp myself, i've used 2000 for 3 years then upgraded to XP once my computer reached it's hardware standards, if your benchmarks arn't to great you can still use xp you just need to know what to disable.
