xp-virus??

My wife's computer is an AMD 900 with win xp on it. She hasn't been able to download her email for a couple of days so, she rebooted (tried to) and now at log on when she clicks on her name it shows the desktop for about a half a second and then goes to loggin off screen(saving settings or whatever it says) I have tried rebooting several times, booted to norton av cd and scanned the hd with no report of viruses. Still no go. Our computers are networked, so I'll update my nav definitions and scan her hd from my computer, in the mean time any ideas? we need to get this box going.

Can you provide more information like what she did before when the computer was able to boot, any thing she did prior to when the computer couldn't boot. BTW, you said that her HDD was scanned with AV (Anti-Virus) An AV is only good if it is updated daily because there are tons of virii out there and to keep up to date, you would have to update everyday. If you are going to scan her PC from your computer, make sure your AV is updated with the latest definitions.

Sounds more like her Profile has been Disabled or Deleted.

Log in with Administrator rights and check the profile.

got in in safemode and created another user w/ admin rights and it does the same thing. We've tried em with and without password protection. I updated my av scanned her main drive with no report of virus. Although I'm not sure it scanned her root files because I had to open her drive and select all and scan...if ya know what I mean. She can't think of anything she did that could cause it.

yes I updated the virus definitions on my computer and scanned hers with no results. If I just click on her drive in "my network places" it scans like 2 files so I have to open the folder and "select all" and then right click and scan, so I don't know if it actually scanned the root files....if that makes since. She went into safe mode and went into "restore my computer wizard" and set her computer like it was a month ago and it still didn't boot.

I don't think he can get into restore. What's the key to press...If he can get into the option of "Boot from Last Known Worked Config *i know i didnt write it correctly but u know what i mean, the boot from the last good known config, maybe the computer will be able to boot from the config before she downloaded the file from KaZaA. Hopefully. If all fails, I suggest a Clean Install. Yes, that will mean you will have to format all your files but it's the only way.

see my last post about restore.....& how did you know she downloaded something from kazaa? does this sound like a known virus? I tried last night to reinstall xp on top of this installation and it wouldn't do it. I'll try it again. If all else fails we will reformat, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Sorry about the KaZaA part...been helping lots of people in different thread, I got mixed up. I would tried the "Last Known Good Configuration" (I don't remember how to bring up that option, ask around though) and try to login with that.

The TROJAN that has been spread by KaZaA is the W32.Benjamin.Worm
which has totally different symptoms. If you have your viri definitions up to
date it would have found it.

To boot with the "Last Known Good Configuration", just Reboot your
computer while holding down the F8 Key.

You can also try booting into the Recovery Console.
Boot from the WinXP CD and choose 'R'
At the prompt, type FIXBOOT then Enter. Then answer 'Y'

tried both last known config & fixboot ...no change. I am now reinstalling xp without formatting. Hopefully that will fix it and all of her stuff will still be there. We got the important stuff off of there via the network...hopefully, seems like every time I format one there is something that I wish I would have saved. Drives are cheap enough these days it would almost pay to just put in a fresh drive and keep the old one for storage. SO, if this don't work I may just do that.
