Here is one I haven't seen here as yet.

I have a Win 2000 Pro system that acts as a program server for my small office peer-to-peer LAN.

I have 11 workstations, 10 of whom may be operating this program at any one time (by license restrictioons). When each station starts it has a mapped drive that points to the D: partition on this W2K computer. Each station's username and user password is listed as a user on the W2K system.

All this worked just fine while all the workstations were running Win98SE. I have now upgraded them to WinXP-Pro and all of them but one work as before. One system logs on and finds all mapped drives (there are a total of three per workstation for various reasons) . . . BUT the W2K system. Therefor, the program won't launch as it can't find the path.

If you go into Explorer and double-click on the mapped drive with its red X it gives you a password screen which has the same username as the person who just logged on. Typing in the same password that this user just used to boot the computer, it then logs onto this mapped drive instantly and everything is fine for the rest of the session.

The next morning, it starts all over again. There is only one User on the workstation, and when you click on her icon it gives you the password field and you type in her password. It completes the logon, but is not connect to the W2K system. Hit the mapped drive, fill in the password and away we go for another day.

I have checked and rechecked and had others look at the exact spelling of the username and the password, and they are identical on both systems . . . yet this one system won't connect to this mapped drive without manually entering the password.

Any ideas?????

Delete the drive mapping and completely re-create it.

In the drive mapping wizard there will be a blue link that says "Login as a different user" Click on it and enter the username/pass, also tick the Save Password box, click OK. Then click the Reconnect on Startup box and click OK.

The drive should re-map on startup now

Thank you for the suggestion.

These were newly created users, as their names had to be changed during the update process (can't have the same computer and user name like in Win98), but there may have been some sort of corruption in the creation on this system. I will give that a try and let you know.

Under Windows XP/2K, you are allowed only 10 computers in a peer to peer network without a dedicaited server (Server2k or 2k3). Ape Out.

Ape,
Thank you for the reply. Yes, I remember that I am only supposed to have 10 active users logged into a Win2000 Pro station, but I can boot this system as the 2nd, or 5th, or 12th system to log into the LAN and I get the same results. It will see all the other computers on the LAN, but not the Win2000 computer until I manually log in. Could this possibly be because This user was the last one created on the Win2000 system? I don't remember if it was, but it is possible.

And the second thing . . . why did it work when this was a Win98SE system, but not now that it is upgraded to WinXP???

The limit is 10 active at any one time. Are you using workgroups? One thing to try is when entering the user and pass enter it in this format:
<Computer Name of W2K connecting to>\<user name>
<password on W2K box for this user>
