I'm looking to upgrade from 32-bit Windows XP Pro to a 64-bit operating system for various reasons. Which would you recommend, XP64 or Vista64, and why?

Drivers would seem to be a moot point, I've found X64 drivers for my Canon printer and a Netgear Aetheros chipset driver which works for my Airlink101 card.

I suggest Vista64, far better support both now and future from 3rd parties. Plus the security features of Vista64 are better than XP64.

I agree...for long-term use, Vista x64 makes the most sense, and it is more secure. I would suggest checking for a Vista x64 driver for your printer first, though, because that is one area where an XP64 driver may not work for Vista.

Also, you can get retail-boxed Vista x64 so you can transfer the license to system after system over its service life (XP Pro x64 Edition is OEM only).

I prefer Vista x64 over even Vista x86, so that's what I'd go with. Assuming this system can handle Vista x64, it could easily handle running XP in a Virtual PC 2007 session for any old application compatibility issues.

What about game performance? For example, I read that Bioshock ran better in XP regardless of if Vista was running DX9 or DX10 in the Bioshock thread. I haven't read very many XPv64 vs Vista 64 comparisons though, so I couldn't be too sure.

I'm also thinking about waiting until Vista SP1, since as far as I know there are still small but significant bugs in Vista when compared to XP.
-Vista forgets all individual folder view settings?
-reduced network (LAN only?) speed when playing any audio
-Slower file transfer rates

Also, the Vista situation with the Audigy 2 ZS seems rather bleak without EAX; I've even read integrated sounds better in Vista. In fact, this may be the only case where the Vista (x64) drivers are infinitely worse than the XPx64 drivers for my hardware, although it's more an issue of Microsoft overhauling handling of sound than simply driver updates..

Basically, in the short-term of say, one year, is it really worth going to Vista (Ultimate) x64 over XP Pro x64? I've yet to be really compelled Vista x64 is a better road than XP x64.. most of the responses here have been about drivers, but in actuality at present the XP drivers seem much better than the Vista drivers, and at least one of them (Audigy 2 ZS) isn't likely to change in the foreseeable future.

Not true for Creative... also security isn't a huge concern for me, I'm more concerned about file transfer speeds (I do a lot of it), music not harming my network performance (I do lots of LAN activity), and folder settings (it's a pain in the ass to have to reconfigure folders' Detail columns every time I visit them.. no, I'm not going to keep 30 Windows open).

If I know that my XP64 drivers are infinitely better than my Vista64 drivers, would you all still recommend Vista? (I feel like I'm talking to a stone wall... all of you likely feel the same.. if you can justify just how much better Vista's security is after I turn off Windows Firewall and UAC )

Bioshock runs fine in Vista x64,FPS was fine for me,as for Vista drivers(FYI have all )I find them excellent ,do remember I'm using 64 bit version and even have drivers for things like ColourVision SpyderExpress2 device,USB bluetooth,Leadtek DTV etc..

I would not say XP drivers are a lot better then Vista drivers,Vista drivers and FPS in games has come a long way over last 6-7 months.

I have not notice that .

Slower file transfer rates

With all the Windows updates installed including performance packs, can't say I have notice that.

If you are going to wait for SP1 then that's not out until next year, people forget about Windows update where Microsoft do release some Vista fixes/improvements on that.

Vista x64 as it stands right now I find excellent on stability, gaming is not even an issue,I have yet to find a 32 bit game I can't run.

Has anyone had trouble running COD 2 on Vista x64? My pc is intel G33 MOBO onboard graphic card support DirectX 10. COD2 simply won't launch on Vista x64. Not sure it's the graphic card or x64 causing it.

Meantime, thinking to buy a new Nvidia GeForce 8600GS hoping sovle this problem. Anyone has problem with Nvidia Geforce driver on Vista x64? I haven't found their driver download page for Vista x64 so far.

Call of Duty 2 launches for me, but freezes within 5 seconds, preventing me from passing through the logo and opening movies to the main menu. I'm using an 8600GT, and I find nVidia's Vista drivers just fine, possibly even better than the XP drivers for the 8600GT, as I haven't been able to make dual display with different resolutions work in XP.

If you're also running Vista or XP 64bit, then it must be the 64bit OS preventing COD2, as I have another PC running Vsita 32 bit and GeForce 8600GT, COD2 runs fine.

I have to say that I am an avid supporter of XP x64. I tried vista x64 ultimate. I removed every variable that could make it not work and guess how far I got. I got to completeing installation for hours and finally I just turned it off. Formatted and went back to xp x64. Im sorry I still see new products comming out today with xp x64 support so its not totally dead probably of the fact that people want more memory for programs but arent really ready for vista and are comfortable with xp. All my drivers are fine. Yes from time to time I run into a program that won't install or run. Thats not cuz of xp just bc of the 64bit arc. I wanted so much for it work and just to play nice but nope. I even sent the discs back to newegg for replacement and well they said they are fine. I reset my bios to default no OC. I tried one stick of ram. Nothing just constant freezing. Tried a different dvd drive and still nothing.
