The TL is both automatic and semi-manual - called the SportShift. You can upshift and downshift with the shifter as you want (no clutch though), or you can have it done automatically.

Bah - you know what he means He wants to row the gears himself, and push a clutch IMHO - that was the biggest pitfall of the last gen CL/TL (although, Honda got smart and included a 6-speed manual with the last MY CL, it was still a mistake to wait that long).

Ack, it hurts! It's still got a torque convertor

Yes I know what he means. But I just dont see the appeal of one more pedal. Of cource, since I drive a Civic as well, you know I'm not the sportscar type of person who WANTS a manual.

Who sayws you need to be the sportscar type? My Scion xB is manual, and it has less HP than your civic

It's not the extra pedal, it's the inner workings of the entire transmission!

I guess you don't. But 108 hp vs 115 hp is pretty close to splitting hairs here. Heck, won't a window sticker add 7 hp.

I'd be willing to give up the manual since people have said it has nice pickup.

Manual is nice, and god knows I love it (I drive amanual and swore that I would never drive anything else), but driving a manual POS around taught me one lesson:

There are more important thigns than havign a manual transmission...like having a car whose doors aren't falling off, having a car that doesn't burn oil, having a car that emits less than 103dB of noise from the cracked exhaust, etc...

The TL seems to have none of these...

manual = great!
manual that is powering a pos: Not so great
automatic slushbox but comfortable ride: worthy of consideration...

Well, manual transmissions will certainly make a difference in your eggbeater, but the 200TL (assuming it has the 225hp v6) probably won't need it as much...

My 1990 Accord ...oh god, if it didn't have a manual, I would have gone crzy..moreso than now

was mine... til i traded her in for a 2005...

great car...never had any transmission issues which this car was known for though...that would be the only reason not to get this car (Honda extended the warranty on the tranny from 50k miles to 100k miles)....

2000 Maxima. It will be nice and fast, with a 5 speed, reliable, and have less miles than a comporably priced 2000 tl.

i'll be the first to say it, don't get the TL.

it's a great car but that generation is plagued with transmission problems. unless you can verify that you still have a warranty that'll cover it, i'd avoid it. but then you still have to waste time taking your car in if it does have any problems.

personally, im settling for a 2001-2002 accord ex coupe, 5 speed. i just don't want to take the chance of a crap tranny on those TLs, auto accords, and some auto crv's i believe.

edit: where are you getting a $10k price on a 2000 tl? that seems really low cause the 4 cyinder accords are going for around 11-12k. a few TL's on craigslist are going for 15-17k, but even after bargaining, should be around 13-14k...

.....home much could a faulty transmission cost in repairs...assuming that I get an extended warrenty and it fails after 100k...is this the issue where it grind the gears?

i couldnt tell you since i don't own one, but from my research i just decided to stay away from the autos. check some accord/honda forums. i'm just trying to stay as practical as possible since i'll be going back to school in august. what are your other options?

Might as well resurrect this one...I'm looking at a 1999 TL for about 13K with 53000 miles on it...seems like a good deal to me, but not if the transmission problems will happen in the next year or two. When do they usually start to crap out?

I was thinking about an old accord, and I even found a 2001 Acura 3.2TL for $10k, but they jsut look so old.

It's not like the 2004 Taurus is a dream car or anything, but 2001 is getting old...

2001 is barely broken in for an Acura. seriously, if it has less than 75K, i'd go for it.

My dad has an 04 and ADORES it. It's a sweet car to drive or be in. You won't be upset with it.

yeah if the auto tranny holds up on the TL, the rest of the car is bulletproof

FYI my '99 Accord V6's auto tranny is still fine with 81K...

/knocks on wood. crosses fingers.

just came back from the test drive for my TL. It drove like a dream, and was immaculate inside. The outside was almost in perfect condition, with the exception of one minor scratch and a very small dent on the passenger door panel. Have to see what theyd be able to do on the price though, it was at almost $14,000.
