YACT: Buying a Mazda 3

After checking out the civic and others, I pretty much settled on a Mazda 3 i Touring, it's a nice car.

But there is a decision to be made:

The dealer has a used one, 2007 with 900 miles on it, for $1000 less than a new one with the same specs. It looks basically new, this makes it really tempting, but I'm not sure if I should trust the dealer.

It's still under warranty, and he said there is nothing wrong with it, but why would someone return a brand new car to the dealer?

It's got plates, so someone bought and returned it. The dealer said it was because she wanted a hatchback instead.

What do you guys think new or used and save $1K?

I'd go with the new one myself. The first 900 miles are the most important. That one is probably the one they let everyone test drive. Oh and I have a 2006 Mazda 3s I ordered from the factory so I speak from experience

if you'd be happy with the used one, I would ask for a bigger discount, closer to $2000 would satisfy me.

Actual prices on new vs. used?

Also take into consideration incentives that may apply to the new one vs. the used one. You might come out ahead on the new one with financing or rebates if any apply.

I just bought a new Mazda 3 on tuesday and I go in tonight to pick it up. There are no rebates/incentives on the 2007 model. You can probably talk the price down a bit, just make sure he's not just giving you $1000 off sticker.
For the Mazda 3 i Touring, MSRP is 17,055 and I believe invoice is 15,968 (at least thats the price you get if you buy it via the S-Plan program, which I believe is invoice). So there is about $1000 worth of haggle room already in the price of a new one.

If you really want a good deal talk to the fleet manager or internet sales manager. I got my 2006 in 2005 for $300 over invoice. I also had a $500 rebate but that isn't available now.

i don't know if they still have them, but i bought a $250 off zoomzoom coupon from eBay. i think they were giving them away at Mazda promotional events.

present the coupon the dealer at the VERY end, when you've negotiated the absolute lowest price. dont' even mention it before.

btw, i've had my 3 for a few weeks now and i love it

Yeah I don't think they have any rebates yet on the 07's

I can get a new one for invoice or a used one for $1000 under invoice... I think I might risk it and save the $1K. It's still under warranty if there is anything major wrong...
