I'm considering the Marlin XT-22TR, Savage 64, and perhaps some from CZ 452,455.

The Marlin is nice since the tube mag holds like 18-26 rounds, but since they were acquired by Remington, the quality has been questionable. The Savage seems universally liked at a very good price and CZs seem to be a bit more expensive with more bells and whistles.

My intent is plinker and apocalypse/ragnarok/doomsday scenario to hunt small game should the world go crazy, probably more the former.

Get something in 22mag or 17hmr instead of 22LR. I couldn't tell from their site though if the TR is a mag or LR so I apologize if that's your preference all along.

The 22mag and 17hmr are just way more fun to shoot than a regular 22LR. It's like shooting lasers at bunnies and squirrels.

And nearly the ftlbs of a standard .38 Don't know about the ammo cost.

It's cheaper than 17hmr so it would be my preference. It's still very cheap compared to other ammos for a plinking gun. Granted I shoot a lot of 308 and 45acp so everything seems cheap to me.

But for maybe a little more money the 22mag is much more satisfying to shoot than the 22lr.

I stand corrected on cost, at 14 cents a round on cheaperthandirt the 22mag is much more than the 4 cents for 22LR though much cheaper still than the 22 cent 17HMR.

Bear in mind the higher capacity is only if you're shooting .22 Short, and shorts are actually slightly more expensive than LR.

I got a Marlin 60 last year which has been great. Basically the same gun just with a semi auto action. But there are a lot of complaints out there about Remlin.

Personally a CZ455 with the mannlicher stock has been on my do want list for a while, so that would get my vote.

I have a Savage bolt action, 22LR. Clip holds 5 I believe, which is kind of annoying to reload so much, but I think they make large capacity clips. Also it has am 8x scope on it, but it has been proving to be a pain to calibrate. I'd buy a highly quality scopeif I could afford it.

I've fired the CZ 452. Not bad on its own, but the magazines suck and the hi-caps are pricey.

If you're not determined on bolt-action, Henry makes some good lever-action rifles in every caliber mentioned so far. Same positives as the Marlin.

I recently purchased a Henry lever action .22 for my wife's birthday. Hands down, one of my favorite rifles now. Fantastic quality for the money.

I'd suggest:

- Ruger 10/22 (hard to go wrong with one of these, you don't hear many complaints about them and my friend's shoots and looks great. Tons of accessories available too.)
- Savage Model 64 or Mark II (I have the latter bolt action .22LR, no complaints here except for 10 round mag capacity.)
- Marlin 795 (my brother has one; I've shot it, seems great from what I've read and my experience with his. Takedown is a bit weird though but nothing bad.)

Depending on brand and location, at minimum you are looking at $0.06/shot for .22LR, $0.19/shot for .22 mag, and $0.23/shot for 17 HMR.

Comparison of .22 mag and 17 hmr: http://www.chuckhawks.com/compared_17HMR_22WMR.htm
That's a really great article. Thanks!

My buddy has a .17 HMR (bolt-action I believe), and man is that thing accurate. 1 MOA is easily attainable from his rifle (Savage, I forget the model though).

I have a Ruger 10/22. Excellent rifle, never had any issues with it and it is very accurate.
Used mostly for varmints around the house and out in the back yard but I also do a lot of plinking. Very modifiable if you're into that. Mine is totally stock, don't even use a scope.
You won't be disappointed. Check one out.

If you like the CZ, get the CZ. Guns last practically forever, so it's worth spending the extra money if you like it.

I've got the CZ 455 Lux. It'll shoot 5 rounds into one ragged hole at 25 yards with ironsights

Another vote for a 10/22...you can still find 50 round mags for them and you can dress it up in tons of ways if you want...that or build an AR-22, still trying to decide myself if I want to get a dedicated 22 upper for my AR

if you wanted an out of the box tack driver, i would suggest Savage Mark II BTV series.

I have one and with Wolf Target Match ammo at 50 yards, I can get 5 shots in a single hole that a dime can cover.

This is a heavy gun though, you would not want to lug it around hunting or SHTF scenario.

I just got a ruger take down 10/22 yesterday, and though it is my 4th 10/22, it is just an awesome little rifle. Comes with a nice case, breaks in half for compact storage, and shoots awesome.
