ahh thank you for the links BTW are the sales through gunbroker reliable too? Whenever I buy anything over $100, I get paranoid

I've also had a lot of transactions through gunbroker without issue. Just pay attention to the feedback score, but I have always had good luck (use common sense, and use credit cards/USPS Money Orders).

It's like ebay, you're bound to run into an idiot sooner or later but a lot of the listings are from dealers and not individuals.

Find a local dealer, see if he can order it...if not ask if he does FFL Transfers and for how much. Over $25-30 is rape IMHO.

Hope you've at least shot a .45 and know what to expect, I always preach 9mm for a first gun if you have never shot anything before.

A full size 1911 .45 is a very easy gun to shoot. .45 is a relatively "slow" round, it's not nearly as punch as .40 or even 9mm.

This. They also clearly mark which sellers are FFLs in the seller description.

Yes but it still has a heavier recoil. It isn't a snap with muzzle rise but it does have a more pronounced push into your palm.

QFT...in general people with even basic feedback probably don't want to scam people that are buying firearms. They'd go for lower hanging fruit like eBay and CL, rather than people professing they are firearm owners

Got my receiver extension/buffer and stock in today. Almost lost an eye to the buffer retainer - didn't get the tube screwed in quite enough and it flew out. I definitely feel like I need a vise for tightening the castle nut - the wrench keeps slipping off.

Tension doesn't hold it in place. You either stake the castle nut to the endplate or use some loctite.

FWIW, I've never had them back out enough to worry about.

Yeah, I don't think I really want to stake it. I may be swapping out my endplate for one with a loop or QD mount and "unstaking" seems annoying. I'll pick up some blue loctite if it gets loose.

You don't unstake them. You just screw them back off and break the existing staking on the endplate. This means that the endplate itself is a disposable item.

Ok. So if you've got it tightened down correctly, it shouldn't be able to back out.

Nut keeps the end plate from sliding up the buffer tube. End plate tooth keeps the buffer from turning.

Yep, now that I think about it, you're right. Thanks for your help/input on everything. Just waiting for my PSA upper and MBUS sights to ship while figuring out if I want to buy a scope now or wait. Need to pick up a few hundred rounds of ammo, a bore snake, an ammo can or two, and maybe a nice Pelican case as well.

There's still enough wiggle between the timing tooth and the slot in the buffer tube to create enough rotation to loosen the castle nut over time.

I haven't staked mine either, but I don't really depend on my rifle with my life so just tightening it when I see it loosening up isn't a big deal

Another poster said the same thing I'm going to: this works if you don't depend in your weapon for life and death. Over time it can cause the nut to loosen, which is why the military stakes it.

Did you ever decide what kind of scope you wanted?

Best thing I ever did was buy 1 each of the Chinese clone scopes until I figured out what I really liked.

Whats better for stopping bad guys when they are close enough to spit on? 9mm, .40 or .45? Taking mag capacity into account in California of course. I can have 10 rounds of 9 or .40, but only 8 of .45 due to large bullets I presume. Will be buying defensive pistol.

I would go with a short shotgun, but I have a narrow hallway that I will need to function in without someone grabbing the end of the damn barrel and wrestling me for it.

Probably the Optisan Mumba. I thought about a cheap red dot (Primary Arms Micro Dot) with a magnifier, but it seems like a lot of people prefer the Mumba.

If it helps, I have both a Bushnell TRS-25 and a Mamba. I prefer the Mamba.

Wife has the TRS as she likes her rifles to be light.

You can't get a short shotgun in CA, no SBRs.

Magazine size limitations are round counts, not volume either. Hence why a lot of people prefer .45s because they get to use all of the available volume in their pistol's grips.

Bullet ballistics are a hot topic, you'll never reach a consensus on this. Just pick what you find fun to shoot and willing to shoot regularly.

If you train regularly with a firearm that potentially doesn't have the same 'damage' as another firearm but you refuse to even shoot that firearm for fun, which do you think you'll do better with in a stressful situation?

Actually there are plenty of 10+ round .45 guns out there, shouldn't be an issue.

Off the top of my head:
http://us.glock.com/products/model/g21
http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/...tegory1_750001_750051_757782_-1_757781_757781
http://www.springfield-armory.com/assets/pdf/SPRINGFIELD_Book_XD9611.pdf
http://www.ruger.com/products/sr45/models.html

You could also buy an extended 10 round mag for a 1911 if you're going that route.

Regarding ballistic performance there are definitely differences, the raging debate is whether the differences are significant enough to matter with modern defensive ammo. For my money, if I can only have 10 rounds I want the biggest baddest rounds I can get and still afford to shoot, which for me means .45. Even if there's only a 10% improvement over 9mm, that's 10% more energy going into the bad guy, not to mention a bullet that makes a bigger hole.
