Anyone have a recommendation for gun boxes/safes? I have a need to lock up 2 hand guns at home and 1 in my vehicle. Seems like Simplex locks are pretty popular for home boxes. For the car, I see the Titan Vault is really well liked, but I don't want to spend that much. How would something basic like this work out? http://www.center-of-mass.com/Store_InCarGunSafe.htm

Just need to figure out where to put it and how to lock it to the vehicle. Need a strong cut resistant cable.

I'm not sure how to get a "clean and concealed" install in a vehicle as that is something I'd be interested in as well. In the home for my sig226 and my wife's glock19, I use a fort Knox pistol box for storage when we are not around and the simplex lock is nice.

The best thing you can do with a gun in a car, is keep it in something that doesn't advertise what it is, don't let people see it, and never let anyone know you store it in the car.

Security through obscurity. Someone who knows you carry a gun in a strongbox can have box and all out in a minute if they come with the right tools.

Hidden compartments are your friend too. SUVs are much better at this than cars are.

what terry said

if you cant fit it under a seat and have it attached via the seat bolts I doubt I would bother.

a cutter that will destroy that cable is CHEAP, even cheaper if they have a battery powered angle grinder, window broke gun box gone in about 30 seconds

Im working on a case for my airlight thats obscure. its just a little too long for the CD case I bought it turns out

it works, but I want to keep 2 quik strips with it so I need something a little larger, but still small enough to slide under the front seat, in the center console, or glove box, that wont draw any attention

because who steals cd's anymore?

recommendations for ar-15 flashlight?

I don't need to melt my assailants' corneas with a beam hotter than the sun and I don't need a flashlight that will stand up to 150 mph sand storms while being blown around by RPG fire. Which is why I am not asking this question on ar15.com.

Just whatever you guys use that is somewhat reasonable.

There is a group buy going on for the inforce weapon light over on ar15armory right now, and looks to be a good little light -

If you want something cheap and simple, just pick up a surefire G2 nitrolon and use 1" scope mounts (if you have a rail to mount it to that is).

A used Surefire light and a CREE led conversion. You can get the halogen models cheap and the Led conversion is cheap and bright.

You should pick your light by where and how you want to mount it.

ETA: I upgraded the Surefire M951 with a CREE and I use it with a tape switch.

Yeah, I'm not looking to put a hardened safe in my truck. Just something to hold it out of view when I'm in places that I can't carry (work, posted private property, etc.). Having a lock and being tied down to the vehicle are just nice to keep it out of the hands of petty thieves, mechanics, passengers, kids, etc.

I just use a streamlight tlr-1 on my tavor... At about $100 I can afford to buy one for each of my HD guns. Surefire is nice but double the price :-\

Thats what i have as well and i find it to be the perfect brightness for the home. Remember if you have light coored walls and you shine those 500W lights it can actually blind you and the bad guy. The TLR-1 is bright enough to light up the whole room with the main beam going towards the target and even on white walls wont blind you. If you do use it outside its still bright enough to light up targets at least 100 feet away (all ive tested, itll go further but i hit bushes after 100 feet)

I actually have the tlr-1s but i found i dont care for the strobe. it bothers me to much during use to really be effective. But that is just me. I know when i was looking there was a like 5 buck difference in price so the 1s was worth it.

I love my tula SKS! Shot it for the first time before i went down to Cali for work a month ago and it was fun to shoot. With irons i was probably shooting 3moa with cheap herters ammo. Its capable of better though! Wont write ot much but its worth the money and is fun to shoot for the money.

THe m44 is on my radar too. Either that or the type53 since those are half the cost. Just have ot decide myself which one i want to get! Then again i havent even shot my 91/30 yet lol.

And on a positive i have some nice surprises for when i get home again on friday Going ot be a fun weekend thats for sure!

The new TLR-1 HL has some stupid high number of lumens, over 600.

Went shooting today. AR-15 isn't finished yet, but I have a Remington 870 and Ruger LCP that I hadn't fired yet.

870 - I definitely need to get rid of the pistol grip only. It's fun, but incredibly impractical and kills your wrist. I had big issues with the action getting stuck forward after firing. Seems like a common 870 Express issue that can be solved by a good cleaning and a couple hundred brass shells.

LCP - I have huge hands and I actually had no issues holding onto the gun without a pinky extension. Laser sight needs to be adjusted.

Shot a few other guns:
Glock 19 - I've had this for a while. The most reliable gun I've ever fired. I've never had a stoppage.

Ruger 10/22 - I haven't shot a rifle since I was a kid, so this was a good test for how the AR-15 is going to feel. I shot a tight group with iron sights and the gun just felt good. I might need to buy one, if I can find 22lr anywhere.

Josh, if you haven't already, you might look into replacing the tube follower on that 870 express. Seems the plastic one that Remington used gets worn out pretty quickly.

There's aluminum and stainless models out there, but not all of them are well designed, and may force you to file down the retention bump inside the tube, in order to get the new follower installed (the plastic one has detents in it, to get past the retention bump).

The one I'm likely going to get is the stainless steel one at the top of this page, at Brownell's website. It comes highly recommended, and at $22, isn't going to break the bank.

Here is what I currently use. Bright and reasonable price with simple operation. Previously I used a TLR-1S and while it worked well the toggle switch operation left a little to be desired.

With the brightness available from smaller lights like these I just don't see the need for heavier flashlight style lights.

That light interests me, I'll have to look into it! How much pressure is required to activate the light? Does it make any noise when activated? I have the stream light pressure button and it makes a click noise if pressed on most of the button except a small edge of the button. It also takes a deliberate amount of pressure to activate.

I managed to resist the temptation on both of those. But.... I may be getting a scholarship through school, and if that comes through, I believe I may order a CMP Garand to celebrate.

I was going to start a new thread but decided to post this question here instead:

Is the current ammo "shortage" and the excessive current rise in gun prices turning you off to this hobby? I ask because these issues are really having a detrimental effect on my enjoyment of the hobby. I went out yesterday to purchase a Savage Mark II to teach some basic marksmanship to my wife and came away empty as the SG store that I visited does not sell the Mark II with iron sights AND they had no 22 LR ammo for sale. The salesman even recommended that I give up on buying a 22LR and instead focusing on .223. Additionally, I've been looking to buy some MILSURP 7.62x54R but almost every place I check is sold out ... and those that do have it are wanting a premium for it.

I need to find another hobby, a hobby not defined by the greed and hoarding I am currently experiencing.

supposedly the initial price hike in ammo/scarcity was the result of Iraq and Afghanistan. the military was hoovering up all the brass the ammo makers could stamp out. the latest hoarding is from sandyhook and AWB legislation saber rattling.

theoretically if this follows the '93 brady bill ban timeline pattern, the initial buying binge and general hoarding should die down in a couple of years. Assuming no new wars or occupations, the military should be winding down their ammo purchasing and prices should drop.

I've also heard that DHS is buying record amounts of ammo, and DOD has a policy in place to shred reloadable brass instead of selling it.

those DHS stories are mostly republican/libertarian sensationalists trying to generate FUD over big govt and police state. there were a couple of articles pointing out the breakdown of the purchase orders vs number of agents/required yearly arms recertification ammo usage/general practice sessions/etc. the ammo usage rate was basically normal and the only thing that made it look excessively large was the fact that the purchase order was meant to cover a couple of years.

I never bothered to research it, because honestly it doesn't matter. If it's happening, not like there's anything we can do about it.

I know the DOD thing is true.
