If it's dark enough in the house to benefit from a red dot or laser, then it's dark enough that his TLR-1 is probably the better option. As someone above said, I doubt a red dot is going to be all that useful in this type of situation as we're not talking standing on a line at the range and taking your time to line up a shot.

We're talking the sound of a smashed window at 3am, bloodshot eyes, tremendous grogginess, heart rate elevated to where it feels like it's jumping out of your body - grabbing the gun and pointing it in the right direction at that point is a challenge, let along trying to acquire a target in pitch black through an aiming reticle.

This, IMO the best option is a big-dot night sight.

Worst case scenario just put the big glowing dot on the target and fire. Within 10 feet that'll likely be good enough. After identifying your target obviously.

I finally picked up a reloading kit at the Cabela's after hours party last night. It's a Lyman kit with a T-Mag II turret press. I don't have a bench at the moment (might just use my computer desk when I get a new one) but am wondering about die sets. Can I just buy any die set (RCBS, Lee, Hornady, etc)? What do you guys use?

400 rds per month? I surely do not shoot as much. Plus I still live in a small apartment so no space. Will have to stay with my $0.30/rd average @ Academy (Winchester FMJ 9mm).

Yeah, 400 rounds per month is about what I was shooting last year/early this year. And I also live in a small apartment, don't let the space deter you

I like Lee dies, although I have some RCBS, Hornady, and Redding dies as well. For pistol dies, get the carbide versions to avoid having to lube cases. If you're shooting bolt guns, the Lee deluxe dies with the collet neck sizers are also great. Semi auto guns need to be full lenght sized, so there's no way to avoid lubing those prior to resizing.

AFAIK the threading size for dies is basically standard so they should all work. I'm a fan of Lee dies for their reasonably priced carbide dies and the factory crimp dies.

Outside of weird presses or specialized dies/setups (like 50bmg) most presses and dies will be 7/8-14.

I have only used Lee dies for the 13 calibers i reload for. They are cheap, well made, and produce repeatable results. Pistol wise (as mentioned) go with the carbide die sets. The 4 die set is a great way to go as you get the factory crimp die as well. Rifle dies i have different "sets" of Lee's. deluxe rifle, pacesetter, and something else. All work great.

For just basic plinking ammo any of the hornady, rcbs, or lee dies will work great. Lee tends to be the cheaper from the bit i have seen. Now if you really are reloading for accuracy (mostly rifle) you can get all sorts of dies and Lee is not one i would recommend. You can get micrometer dies, all sorts of bushing dies. Theres tons of options.

Plus I still live in a small apartment so no space

Youd be surprised how little space you need. I do most of my reloading in a 2 feet area of my bench. A 2ft by 2ft area is all you really need. Sure more room helps though

Hooray good local gunstore/range. Found a Safariland IWB holster that fits my Kahr perfectly. Really impressed with this little rig...gun draws like a glock from a duty holster but it conceals under a t-shirt. Highly recommend their leather holsters with the adjustable tension screw on the trigger guard. Never liked all-leather holsters but this one is well-worth the slight extra bulk. The tension screw acts as a stop that makes the gun clunk satisfyingly into place, and it ain't coming out on accident.

edit: I love pure simplistic functionality. Everything you need and nothing that you don't.

Here's a weird anomaly that I feel is worth noting. No one knows how to sight a Kahr. This is the second one I've owned and I just figured it out. Even the company that makes the damned guns does not agree with me, it would appear.

Here is what people typically use for a sight picture:

It's hard to capture on a camera, but with your arm extended, the front sight pretty much fills the squarish notch in the rear sights, much like any other firearm. This feels familiar, and the instinct is to center the dot in the opening, just as you were leveling it with dots on either side of it.

Congratulations; you are now trained to shoot people in the dick.

What I very strongly feel is the proper alignment:

Despite Kahr not actually telling anyone this, it really seems like they made the rear sight like they did for an actual, well-thought-out reason. I don't mean the paint...I mean the actual shape. See the recesses, and how you get those two points at the top? Use those points to bisect the circle.

Congratulations; you are now hitting what you aim at.

I shot some pretty hilarious targets previously. I had some of those five target papers that inexplicably had unused top targets, but with target-sized groups on the white below them, heh. To look at it, it was just like...okay...you're doing something wrong...very consistently. But were you completely missing the target directly beside, directly above, or directly below your grouping?

LOL

When I was in the range in my CPL class there was a pretty cute chick with us. It was her turn to shoot and the drill was 5 shots as fast as possible. She lined up, good form, took aim and proceeded to shoot the target right in the crotch. All of the rest of us were guys and we were all kind of looking at each other awkward and trying to find a way to get past it. One old guy pipes up "Well that fucker learned his lesson!"

Even the instructor teared up from laughing so hard.

Scored some .45 and 8mm at Walmart today. boxes each. I bought 3 boxes of 9's when I got there, got some other stuff I wanted and then back to the ammo section. I noticed there was another guy working that area so I bought boxes of .45

I just don't get it. We have no shortage of ammo here. Last weekend my local gun place had racks full of cheap ammo. They even had bulk brass ammo in a bag. That was new.

They were out of +Ps. Does that count as a shortage?

Who said there is an ammo shortage?

If anything, barring a bunch of (white) kids getting shot at school, there is going to be a surplus. US factories may have not expanded during the last temporary crisis, but the market was flooded with South Korean (PMC), Russian, Mexican, etc ammunition, and I think those new channels will stay open.

When I can buy new brass 5.56 for .36/rd or .27/rd for steel .223 online with no sales tax or .27/rd for steel .223 to balance out the shipping (until I report it on my state returns, of course), I am a happy camper. That seems to be the new bottom.

The same case of .45 I purchased for $860 earlier this year is now available for $470....I like that direction.

That was the first time in months that they had 9, 40, 45 and 223 at the same time. I have noticed that they usually have 45. I figured I'll start getting that and buy me a 45 at some point.

Today's Black Rifle Friday sale was a success.

Scored a brand new AR-15 (flat-top, forged upper/lower, standard furniture, included a 30-round GI mag and a very nice padded rifle bag) for $549. It was built well too, by the best local AR shop in town. Waaaay better than a barebones M&P15 Sport, which usually sells for about $100 more.

Also grabbed some $5 PMAGs.

$5 PMAGS is what I call a doorbuster, that's got to be a loss leader.

Went to Academy this morning. Nothing on the sheves for 9mm (except the expensive HP) and .22LR, just a few boxes of .45, .40, and others (.223 and shotgun).

Did get a rifle carry case for $30 (from $40) and one large case to store ammo ($10).

Anyone have a thought on Federal for carry ammo? I'm liking some of the prices I'm seeing but I have no experience with it.
