Never understood the obsession with DE - and I've fired one. They're notoriously picky with ammo, overly complex and heavy. In .44 mag, I'd take my model 29 *every* day of the week over that.

A range toy, I'd take it. But there are other range toys I'd like

That is it, a range toy. Who would use one for self defense? The thing is huge and uncontrollable. Same with the S&W 500. That thing looks like a revolver from a cartoon.

Guys you've helped a bunch with picking out firearms in the past - most recently a shotgun for my needs.

Coming to you now asking about .45 ACP. I've already got 9mm and .380, but out of the .45s I have shot in the past, I liked shooting them the most. I'm having trouble decide what I'd really like to have. On one hand, I love 1911's and their history... their looks and their proven use over time. However, they generally have lower capacity and from what I've read, can be finicky at times. So, my other few choices were maybe a Glock 21/41, Sig 227, Hk45, FNP45.

I know that I'd like a full size gun, so 4+ inch barrel only. In my great communist state of CT, guns can't hold more than 10 rounds, so I think Glock 21 might be out by default, unless I get it in the 10round version (I think I can). I also think that FNP45 holds 13 by default, too. Something I need to consider.

Any other models I should be considering? If it matters, for 1911's I've been looking at any model that has a rail, 5'' barrel and non ambi safety, and full length guide rod. There's a bunch to name but I'm sure I don't need to list them all for you.

If 10+ rounds are out then a 1911 is a great choice. I own a S&W 1911. It is really smooth for a pistol. I'm a big fan of rifles so that is my primary gun type when going to the range. But every once in awhile will bring the 1911.

My favorite .45 is HK's HK45. For 1911, take a look at Nighhawk custom and Wilson Combat.

Which model do you have for 1911? any experience shooting any of the other non 1911's I mentioned?

Ever shot any other 1911s like Taurus, RIA, Para, etc?

The laser is neat feature. But I never use it.

I have not shot any of the guns on your list. But I have shot a para 1911 and felt it wasn't as smooth as my 1911 if that helps.

It definitely helps. The range I go to rents out guns, but they don't have a huge selection, and generally only have the most basic models. Odds are, I won't be able to get my hands on all the 1911's I'm interested in.

And PS, I can't spend $3k for a Wilson or Nighthawk. $1200 is my absolute limit, and I'd really prefer to be in the <$850 range if possible. If paying $1200 for a Smith and Wesson or Sig was worth it over Taurus, Para or whatever was in the lower range, then I'd pay the premium.

Any non 1911's besides HK45, Glock 41/21, M&P45, etc that I should be aware of that fits that price range?

Sig P220. If I were you I'd just get a 1911 though. I have a Springfield Range Officer, you should be able to find them for $700-800. Ruger's 1911 is also very good, it's a bit cheaper.

Springfield XD/XDM? You can get the XD service compact if you don't want to be arbitrarily gimped on capacity: 4" barrel and 10rds by default.

CZ 97B should also be a good option. BD model if you just want a decocker w/o manual safety.

I don't remember 100% but I thought I counted both of those out because they didn't have rails on any of their models... But I've looked at so many now I can't remember.

Want a rail for light (obviously) for home use as well.

I had not, but it certainly seems to fill all my needs. Most Sig's tend to be in the $900-1000+ range... Why is this one much less expensive?

Short version: polymer frame. SIG Pros go for $450ish but you won't find one in .45.

Huh, and going polymer over alum really saves $300+ on total cost? I'll definitely see if my range has a sig p320 or at least the local gun shops. If not, for the right price I'd buy unseen, because any sig I've ever held has fit my hand wonderfully.

...Still probably going to get a 1911, too. lol Gosh they are just so beautiful.

You should really look at used TBH. Gun forums especially. Last summer I picked up a used P220 in great shape for $550, ended up reselling it a few months later for $500 because it just didn't appeal to me the way I expected.

RIA is coming along pretty well in the gun world, and is worth thinking about seriously. Not sure on Para. I'd *never* trust a Taurus. My info is a few years old now, but I've seen too many horror stories from them.

With 1911s, you get out what you put in. My Dan Wesson is around $1300 new, and a GREAT 1911. (it's also a concealed carry gun - so shorter magazine, 4.25" barrel vs 5" - so you can stay above 4" and not be full size.)

Not to say a $800 S&W or Springfield (or RIA) isn't good, but it isn't as smooth running; the $3000 1911s are insane, but at around $1000 you get better fitting slides and such.

Oh, I most certainly will consider it.

Well I went to the range on Sat and I shot a Taurus 1911 PT. I didn't like how the gun itself performed (sights or something were off, constantly pulled all shots to the left), but I liked the 1911 platform in general.

I shot my M&p9 right after and it made me appreciate how crisp the 1911 trigger is. I know M&P triggers really aren't great (at least I don't think so) but it really made the 1911 seem much smoother. Now I see why so many guys like to compete with them.

Top two 1911's on my radar (for now) are Para 1911 Black ops, and Springfield 1911 "Loaded". I'm still keeping my eye out for a P320, too. I'm not opposed to buying both and then selling the one I don't like as much. Although... I'm usually not one to sell a firearm, unless I really just don't like it.

Springfield customer service is excellent.

I have 2 springfield 1911s and they are great guns.

Agreed, but the best part is the customer service is often unnecessary. I've got a Springfield Lightweight Champion Operator (4" barrel, aluminum frame with rail and night sights) and it hasn't had a single failure in over 1000 rounds. I sorta wish it was steel framed so it could absorb a little more recoil, but it handles it smoothly as it is.

I do not have a 1911 currently, but whenever I'd thought about one I'd eyeballed the Dan Wesson CBOB for quite awhile now, but they do go a bit high price wise.

Nice list there, that Desert Eagle 1911G looks interesting also for $650 but I know nothing about it personally.

That and I like Thompson, and is the same price range, but does sound the trigger might be a problem with it.

Yeah, I'm just throwing things out there, but that Remington 1911R Carry looks kinda interesting, now that I've been looking again.

http://www.1911r1.com/Products/Firearms/Model-1911-Carry.aspx

Well the 1911R1's in general, someone enlighten me on those

*edit* I guess it lists $1299 though, but there a few others cheaper starting at $729 list.

http://www.1911r1.com/

Just throwing that one out there for discussion I guess.
