I bought a new place and I'm having the bathroom tub re-glazed. The tub is in decent shape. 15 years old but has some minor pitting and scratches in it. A tub refinishing company is coming out to do the work. Costs about $400 and takes 2-4 hours. Would you tip this worker? If so, how much? $20? $40?

I generally would under that circumstance. $20 minimum, up to $100 for a full day job. Scaled in between as you see fit.

Why would you tip this guy when you're already paying him $400 to resurface your tub? Do you tip the plumbing guy? Do you tip your dental hygienist or dentist after they clean or fix your teeth? Do you tip your doctor for doing your surgery?

Yeah I don't tip someone for doing a job I'm paying them to do. I'll tip someone unrelated to what I'm paying for, such as a restaurant server (paying for the food, tip for the service). I don't tip if I'm picking up the food, as no service was rendered outside of walking it from the kitchen to the front desk.

I do, actually. Tipped him $100 for being willing to try to drill my granite countertop. I do not, however, tip the owner of the company when he's the one that comes. Only his employees.

Do you tip your dental hygienist or dentist after they clean or fix your teeth? Do you tip your doctor for doing your surgery?

No, because they didn't come to my house.

My general methodology is if it's the owner of the company that's at my house I don't tip. If it's an employee I do. Logic being that the owner gets the opportunity to set their own compensation whereas their employees do not. I appreciate people putting up with my at times hyper-specific requests and the $20-100 I give them is likely going to mean more to them than it does to me.

YMMV.

I never tip for a job I'm paying them to do but do offer them water if I'm around. Beer when they're done and it's to my satisfaction.

I usually don't tip for these kinds of services because their billing rate is already high enough.

Admittedly though, If I get a guy that I feel REALLY does a solid job with good due diligence instead of quickly finishing and explains stuff to me then I'll usually round up or something along those lines.

If it's an especially hot, troublesome job or they go well above and beyond I'll tip but otherwise I just pay the agreed upon price for the service

If it's a small contractor (Like a one man shop) then i would typically not tip. They are getting all the profit off the job and they are charging you enough to ensure there is a profit.

However, if it's a larger company and one of the low wage workers does a solid job, then I do feel inclined to tip. Or, of course, if the service was exceptional then a tip might be called for. Just use your gut.

I despise tipping and not sure why it even exists. And I'm sure it's somewhat awkward for the recipient as well.
