I'm one of those guys who thinks it's stupid to do 500 cruches + leg lifts. I believe it is smarter to do 5-7 sets of 12-15 reps each using weighted cruches, etc. I believe that doing this along with diet will give you much better abs than 500 unweighted crunches. Are my beliefs correct?

Yes

Make each rep harder

8-12rep x 3-5sets [higher sets with lower rep ranges]

Incline sit ups with a weight is ALWAYS good.

BUT sometimes it is good to cycle in a good higher volume ab work out.

Incline sit ups
20reps x 3sets

Don't do 500 crunchs. Cycle your training every 6-8 weeks. And cover everything.

A lower bodyfat will show your abs. Eating and execise!

Koing - cool, thanks.

I always hear people say "well I do like 400 cruches a day but just can't get that 6 pack, I think it's my genetics". I'm thinking to myself that it's basically a waste of time you'll get the 6 pack more from diet & cardio than from doing endless crunches.

It's because they are doing the wrong exercises and or have a bodyfat % that is too high for them to 'show' their abs.

I gurantee if they did some interval sprints/ rowing etc 3-4x a week, good clean eating, good ab exercises like the ones above following the protocol they would have abs that would show.

Another thing is when people GROSSLY under estimate their bf% and wonder why at their 10% they don't have abs!

Building abs only is idiotic and WILL lead to back problems. Work your whole body, with a lot of core exercises, for maximum effect. Legs are very important for the rest of the body to become bigger/stronger as well as themselves.

Want abs workout? 8 minute abs on Youtube. You'll be sore the next day. Up it and do two of them a day. Heck, do it every hour like my friend. You will build abs FAST. Add weights on top too!

Weighted crunches/leg lifts done 1-2x per week max. Abs are a muscle like any other and should be trained as such.

Also, keep in mind that having visible abs has a lot to do with diet and bodyfat levels.

I do ab crunches on a ball. A bit chick, yes, but works well. I get a burn pretty quickly. I then do hanging leg kicks (support self with upperbody and kick feet up bending at the waist) for my lower abs.

It's seriously all about your diet... do all the crunches you like, but without discipline with your eating habits you'll never have abs like I do

Using an exercise ball is good too. You can also add a weight behind your head to make it more challenging.

"Feeling the burn" is not an indicator of progress, however.
