This is my first japanese car and first "non landrover". I call it an oldtimer project, but reality is that it is my daily now .

Will sure need lot of love!

92 Montero Sport 2.8 TD. Took it to dunes today for the first time and so far didn't disappoint.

I thought those came with 2.5 TD.
Assuming thats a 5spd?

Does it have the little inclinometer and altimeter in the dash?

Yes it is 5 speed with reduction box. And has both altimeter and inclinometer, though the are broken. Will need to fix it for sure :-D. Starting first with the most important things. It has few issues...

I was also expecting 2.5 but this was some option i guess?

Funny you guys usually get only the most powerfull ones... Probably not enough interest in start of the 90ties for diesel in america :-D

Replaced cooling water, broke off few rusted bolts lol, fixed rearview mirror, and cleaned overflow water tank. Will post here some updates once something visually interesting is done

Looks good but I can't make a final call on it unless the girl is present like in the first photo.
J/k, it looks good man. Congrats on getting it back to where it belongs!

Thank you! The girl was behind the steering wheel but if you want to see another version than here it is

That image is too much for this forum for many reasons.
Do not post any images like that again.

Why stop there? It belongs in the bottom of the ocean or on a shipping container to Africa. If it were a Honda, Toyota or even a Nissan. I would say keep that in the garage.

Well it is in Africa... So i guess you are happy that the junk does not polute your environment and destroys your uniform car sights
330tkm on clock and still going strong in one of the hardest environment .

Kind of looks like a Suzuki Jimny from back in the day. Wow, just checked - Jimmy is still in production looking all 90s too .. . Jeep wouldn't like those vertical grille slots if sold in the USA.

Yeah I always feel sorry for Europeans tooling around in their gutless wonders.

I drove the new Jimny, actually a really cool car. Imho this a little larger is what new defender should have been. LR fcked it up (again), sadly.

It also always had the grill and afaik was sold in the US (as samurai?). But not much probably.

Mitsu is pretty much dead in the US. I do remember Montero back in the day and always thought it looked good. Your vehicle looks really good for the year and mileage. Are you doing all the work yourself?

Thank you. Trust me it is just low quality of the photo. It was hard to find something not completely rusted to death. Ocean air here is mercyless.
metal parts are ok, but on many places fixed with just asphalt and fibre patches. interior... kind of ok. For me was important the drive train and that it was not modified too much. I needed to use it soon, so only was willing to do basic stuff to make it driveable.
Yes i do all my work my self and always did, at least the basic maintenance and electric. I have another oldtimer back in Germany which i hope to move soon here, this we restaured from scratch. Had more cars, also a defender, but sadly lost all due to covid. So kind of starting new and couldnt be happier how this car surprised me with capabilities and survaviblity.

When will the mods remove you from the forum? You are advertising a website. Trying to find naïve or lonely men to send some dude money pretending to be the woman in the photos.

I know, women are not on the internet and are not allowed to have either hobbies or projects. And if you actually visited the site you would see it is not some dude project.

Over the decades, Mistubishi always seemed like the "shitty" japanese in the states.
I never had faith in their cars based on perception
Always seemed like the carburetors in their cars were cursed.
Always seemed like every Mitsubishi car on the road older than 1987 was white with big soot stain by the exhaust. Tredia? Cordia? Old Galant? Soot
Seemed like every auto shop and pizza parlor were using the mighty max for deliveries.
You had Chrysler using their 2.4 engines and 3.0 V6's in everything and the 2.4's were suspect. I actually had more confidence in Chrysler's pathetic 2.2 engine than Mistubishi's 2.4.
The Starion, once it got the fat fender treatment was pretty badass but it quickly got a rep for valvetrain issues (or whatever the bug thing with the top end was).
The Galant Vr-4 "existed" but I never saw one in the wild.

90's cars was a bit of mess. The Eclipse when it debuted was holy crap badass until people started talking about how their stock engine was toast on cars not that old.
The 3000GT seemed ok but it cost $$$$$$$$$$ and everyone was scared of the possibility of having to actually work on it.
Galant's were pretty common as they would sell to anyone. This was back when Maximas were still considered awesome so Galant didn't have the cool factor. Mirages were just kinda "there".

One thing that did stick out was the Montero. It was right up their with the Isuzu Trooper in that it just had this appeal about them.

I loved my 3000gt and it didn't have that many problems unless you started trying to modify it. No worse to work on than a 300zx and much easier to acquire than a Skyline or Supra.

The Evo was a good car too if you were looking for a rally racer, certainly better designed than the equivalent WRX.

I agree and i have been warned about it a lot, not only by my mazda loving brother in law but also others. Funny enough reliability and feature wise it seems to be a huge upgrade from a defender so, i am not about to complain.

My first choice was old hilux or isuzu pickup, but they are fairly expensive here even for very abused one. This one just begged me to be rescued and cherished.
Not many more other options when you want all mechanical oldschool truck with large diesel (they seem to handle the dust better).

Have been with it also a bit offroading and it handles it nicely, very smooth and confident. Love the crawl gas setting, and short wheelbase. Feels like 90 defender but better.

I actually brought with me old american van (astro) which would be perfect for me here (automatic, 4x4, etc) but i can only use it as a garden house since it is too expensive to put it on local papers. And mine was already quite old and used. So would not be worth it probably.

I lusted over the 300zx when it came out. As years went by and they started to appear on the second hand market one look at that engine bay and another look at the bank account - >Nope
There was a VR-4 floating around the neighborhood not too long ago. Too still see them on the road was pretty cool. The styling touches on 3000gt look better to my than the Dodge Stealth....which I haven't seen in ages. I think the last Stealth I saw was a beater poverty spec ES.

By the time the Evo hit stateside, I think Mitsubishi's lineup[ was a bucket full of "almost". Evo was quick and a by all accounts a REALLY fun car.
Unfortunately, it had tiny shitbox interior with allegedly pathetic clutch life (even when driven sanely).
At least with Subaru's, the cacophony of rattles would create a harmonic that would synch with the clutch harmonics and extend it's life to reasonable levels.

If your starting point is a Defender, everything might seem pretty damn reliable.
Defenders exist to test the ingenuity of its owners to justify the price they paid and to test their ability to fix things on the trail.

Astro 4X4 were hidden gems if they survived the typical life expectancy of 90's GM. Friend of mine use to own one having sold it about 2 years ago.
3 rows with room for stuff behind the 3rd row.
Could tow 5000lbs
4x4

It was pretty disgusting inside having spent 1/4 century as utilitarian commuter\camping\work vehicle with some stains that hint of a hidden shadow realm. But it got the job done and I don't recall it being expensive to keep running. If the one you have still has some life in it, use or sell it. Those things are ancient at this point and should not be left to sit. Things are going to dry out and crack and you'll end up with a nightmare.
It's a momentum car. Gotta keep that sucker on the road and moving or its going to crumble into debris.

How funny would it be if his car got shipped over seas and you bought it.

Yeah - the last year of the stealth was 96 but you really never saw them other than the first generation (91-93) I had a 91 stealth TT and later a 94 3000gt VR4. Once you learned how to work on them they weren't bad, but you really had to get used to bruised and bloodied hands working in that engine bay.

I've worked on a few cars with tight engine bays or ridiculous placement (why would you put this part between the engine and the firewall!!!).
Whenever I get misty eyed for the halo cars of my youth I just remember to say this in the mirror 3 times.
"Vacuum line troubleshooting and replacement"
"Vacuum line troubleshooting and replacement"
"Vacuum line troubleshooting and replacement"

These cars are decades old at this point. It's one thing to keep a 10 year old or even 15 year old car running.
Once a car hits 20+....oooof.

My astro was also a workhorse as hell. It moved from Cali to Germany with 120k mi on clock, towed cars from Netherland to Germany another 200k miles. Then i used it as a daily for 5 years, moved with it overseas and now it sits and finally have its deserved retirement on the beach . Still works everything.
