i FINALLY got my mouse working, turned out it was something to do w/ GPM, cus i did an apt-get remove gpm, and then voila, my mouse worked.

anyways, in the quest to get X to work at 1024x768x16, i ran xf86cfg. well, screen goes black, and system becomes unusable.

i cant switch consoles, ctrl+alt+backspace doesnt work, ctrl+C, none of it gets a response.

so i yank the power (f-s-ck), do it again, same prob. yank the power, reboot (f-s-ck), try xf86cfg again, and now i get errors that it (X) cant find files (sorry dont remember names), but they were files in /tmp.

wtf.....reinstall X????

btw that f-s-ck lock is fugging retarded

With all the e2fsck's some files probably got stuck in /lost+found or just lost. ext2 really doesn't like having the power pulled out from under it. You could convert to ext3 or reinstall on XFS (my preferance) or reiserfs to avoid the e2fscks.

What kind of video card is it? What are the filenames it's complaining about?

X leaves log files when it starts -> /var/log/XFree86.*.log

There may be something in there that would provide a clue. You may want to comment out some of the modules that X is trying to load. I had a similar problem some time ago.

When X starts up it will load some optional modules and configures itself based on the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file (which you generated with xf86cfg).
If you see a particular error in the log file you may be able to modify/disable the problem manually in the config file.

Also, as you've seen, sometimes when X locks up it retains control of the keyboard essentially freezing you out of your box.
At ths point, I fire up my wifes computer and connect to mine remotely (I don't allow root to connect remotely so I have to ssh to my computer as a regular user). Then su to root. Then killall -9 XFree86
This shuts X down without a reboot. Nifty if you have a few computers able to get online.

One last thing - I am not sure if there is much/any difference but I've always had pretty good luck with xf86config (never tried xf86cfg).

what is involved in changing FS's? For ext3 all i have to do is basically create the journal file, right? but for the others...isnt it a bit more involved?

i know i'd have to recompile (not a big deal) cus i only have ext2/minix/vfat/ntfs(readonly)/iso0996 (or whatever the numbers are, you know, for CD's)

its a gf2mx, they were something like /tmp/.X0 or /tmp/.0X or something like that, i thought it was wierd because i didnt think anything in /tmp/ was really all that important.

i've been aware of ext2's shortcomings but i am a bit scared to upgrade for fear of messing things up

Just run "tune2fs -j /dev/hdXX" and it will create the journal, then edit "/etc/fstab" to say "ext3" instead of "ext2".

Of course you still need a kernel that supports ext3, like you said.

Oh and the X thing, frankly I'd just uninstall it and apt-get X-Window-System or whatever the package collection is called.
Will probabaly be easier than trying to recover whatever was damaged.

Just remember to save your /etc/X11/XF86Config
