Put mine in, OC'd to 3ghz, and ran 4 instances of prime95 and checked the temp with speedfan. Ran for 4 hours and the core temps are

43c
43c
40c
40c

idle temps are:

30C
30C
24C
27C

they go up and down a degree here and there.

i'm running a custom water cooling setup. i can't seem to get it to go beyond 3ghz. anybody get their Q6600 up to 3.6ghz (400FSB)? what settings do you have for memory voltage, cpu voltage, etc? i have an asus p5b-e mobo with 4GB of corsair PC1066 memory.

I've got mine running 8x400, here's a screenshot: Link Voltage is set to 1.296V to keep it stable.

You might get owned by the heat tho. You never stated if your quad is also a G0 or not. If its a B3, good luck my friend. It takes water to tame it at 3.6

If its a G0, you better have a TR120 Extreme lapped.

You need to bump the FSB termination voltage to the highest possible.

Then you need to bump the NB voltage 2-3 above stock. Or like 2-3 below the max. 3.6ghz aint a walk in the park. Whoever told you it was must of been smoking some good stuff.

Aigo. I think all of your responses are automatic now. Did you even read the OP?

But I see you're running a 965P chipset. I don't know how well a 965 can OC a quad. try flashing to the newest BIOS.

I hit 3.6Ghz, 9x400. I have a Tuniq 120 Tower and it was running at 1.45v. I have the Q6600 "GO" processor and a MSI P35 NEO-2 FIR motherbaord.

guess i need to get a new mobo. i'm running the latest bios. i was hoping i could hold on to this one for at least a year. i had my E6700 up to 3.9 with it, so i was hoping i'd at least get the quad to 3.6.

aigomorla, it's G0 stepping and as i already stated, it's watercooled. i think my prime95 temps should be a clear indication in itself.

so should i be investing in a p P35 based motherboard?

X38 might be out in as little as two weeks, but I think it will be DDR3 only, which=bend over and take it on pricing.

no big deal. majority of people don't bother with water, so it's not a common occurrence to see it posted.

ok fellas... i'm looking at a new mobo, the ASUS P5K deluxe. now... i saw they had an ASUS P5K3 with DDR3 support. i have 4GB of PC1066 now, but since i'm buying a new board, i figure i may as well go all out. is DDR3 worth the extra bit of dough right now, or should i just hold off and run with the stuff i have? is it easier/better to OC with the DDR3? will i see the same max OC out of DDR2 as i would with the DDR3 counterpart? i noticed a lot of the DDR3 out there is only CAS of like 7 at the best.

I can attest to what Aigo is saying. My G0 is capable of 3.6GHz or more, but only at 1.43V or more. Without lapping either the TR120E or CPU, my load temp was 77C haha. Too hot for my taste and I have extreme air cooling setup. Gonna lap both today.

Right now I have it running at 3.2GHz @1.344V. Idling near high 30s or low 40s. 67C max with full load. Not bad without feeding the CPU over 1.35V.

The reality is that generally it's accepted that performance under 10% in cpu speeds is virtually impossible to notice unless one were to have the 2 systems side by side with a timer. Therefore, a strong argument can be made for a lower volted, cooler running Q6600 at 3.3-3.4ghz as opposed to a 3.6ghz one.

For insance, my Q6600 runs at 61-63*C at load at 3.4ghz and 1.28-1.30V actual. It isn't even stable at 1.40V actual at 3.6ghz and the temperatures start nearing 68-70*C. All things considered, sometimes the tradeoff for extra 100-200mhz isn't worth it for single digit performance gains given the resultant temperature and voltage requirements.

Of course overclocking is a hobby for most of us. It's important to understand the tradeoffs of bragging rights

Either I have a very good "GO" processor or I've got a good mother board P35 MSI NEO-2 FIR. My Q6600 runs at stock voltage 1.25v at 3.2Ghz ultra stable. I had it running at 3.3Ghz until it crashed playing Flight Simulator X.

Your speedfan temps are likely wrong, id use whatever monitoring app came with your mobo.

Speedfan says im at ambient when the mobo monitor says im at 51C.

I've set my standard to 400 MHz. If I cant get 400 more MHz from my previous overclock, than it's not worth it.

Here's my CPU-Z chart. The voltage is at 1.35v with Tuniq 120 Tower cooling and arctic silver 5.

speedfan reports the same temp as asus pc probe, which is what comes with the board. the bios itself actually reports even lower temps. if TAT worked with vista, i'd use those temps, but i can't imagine speedfan is THAT far off.

Usually about 15C, read the threads talking about speedfan correction.

If it matches up with bios youre fine though, what block are you using?

I beat you at 3800Mhz with my Q6600 1,44v. It would run Prime at 3900 1,44v but core 4 failed after a while. Guess i could lower my Vcore at 3800 and it would still be stabel.
