FWIW I thought this was the case as well, but gang murders are actually estimated to contribute to ~10% of murders in the USA. Of course, that's still very significant (certainly more so than spree killings), but that alone doesn't account for the discrepancy between American and Western European murder rates.

People steal for drugs, I dunno how to factor that in. Plus all of the border crime which is trafficking related. Just curious where your data is from, and if it includes innocent bystanders.

My roommate works out of one of the worst Police stations in Houston and he says every night is an adventure.
and 99% of the stuff they deal with never gets media coverage but is still all bad news..

and he did say almost 100% there are not guns involved but beatings and knifings and other aggravated assaults are way up.

Yep. There was a gang going around town at one point stealing purses off women by taking a long sharp knife and cutting the purse strap as well as the arm of the person holding the strap. One good swipe and the strap was cut and a significant portion of the tricep was severed.

And this was a girl gang doing it too. No media coverage on it. But there were several reported cases of it every night for a good long while.

....and i received one pistol from my grandmother when she died ( yes, brazilian law, lol )...it was there in my closet for 6 month, i used it a bit to train my aim, but then realised that i spent more time cleaning it "for emergency use" but never using it... at the end i realised that i had a gun to protect myself for having a gun
so i just sold it, and selling it was the best part of it (guns here, are very expensive )

and that's exacly why i am anti-gun, i pretty much didn't used it...i am ok for for hunting actually...

He just made one of the most reasonable posts in the thread. Yes, the 'far right' and 'far left' ideals are both fucking retarded. And he seems to realize:

a) Crazy people will generally do less damage without guns (generally...a clever, patient crazy person can device a bomb or some such, yes)

b) The crazy people are the problem more worthy of addressing, since getting any kind of 'control' on the volume of guns we have is pointless. That's what I just can't seem to get some people to understand- I don't care how you personally feel about guns, it doesn't make the concept of a nationwide ban or some such any less absurdly impossible.

blankslate, just don't bother. There are too many people here who can't grasp the complexity of the issue, or the concept of 'shades of grey' in general. Not a lot of deep thinking going on when it comes to people arguing over deep-seated, immovable idealism.

I don't own an AR15. I have a MAC90... completely worthless gun. Really no reason for me to own it quite frankly. I bought it in 1994 for $250 and it is registered with the state of CA as part of their assault weapons registration program.

I should sell it. I never shoot it and it just sits in my gun safe.
