I'd prefer people just use the voting booth if they want to change governments.

You and me both. I simply want the option for people to be prepared in case voting no longer becomes an option.

Don't think I'm anti-gun control. I can think of a lot of common sense things that could be done to improve the safety of gun ownership. For a start, my state gives CCW permits to anyone with 100 bucks for life. No tests, just a quick background check. A simple class on gun usage, laws, and safety could go a long way there.

Stop and think. There is only one thing common to all murders ever committed: The will of the attacker to do violence to another person. This is what we really need to figure out a way to change. Attempts to restrict guns (even if it were possible) won't change anything.

Isn't murder already illegal regardless of the tool used to carry out the crime?

What we need are good people who are willing to stand up and fight back against evil. And the good people often need guns to do that.

EDIT: Wanted to add that guns are NOT the best way to combat evil. A cultural change in the way members of our society view their responsibility towards and treatment of others would be far better. Teach your children well and you won't have to worry if they have access to a gun.

9/11 = 3000 dead, 6000 injured.

19 hijackers/300 = 157 dead a piece

what do we ban....

just a little perspective is nice.

IIRC we banned Al-Qada, Osama Bin Laden, Iraq, and Afghanistan. So yeah, I'd say we took that one pretty seriously.

Right, a docment drafted when towns were still getting burned down by Indians.

I'm starting to put the Constitution literalists in the same camp as the biblical literalists. Pretty similar ways of thinking it seems. Appeal to authority, rejection of any reasoned criticism or argument. The President was actually wise to lump gun nuts and god nuts together a few years ago.

Yes we should just interpret and manipulate the basis of law in this country because its not written to meet your motives...so sorry about that. :\ Don't like it? Then start writing your elected officials or run for Congress where you can try to sway enough votes to change those pesky words.

Sounds like you agree that it's the people who are dangerous, not the weapons.

Glad we agree.

+1 that is what I have been saying since minute 1.
Dont ban the tools.. fix the real problem the people behind the violence.

Moral of the story: Crazy people can still hurt and sometimes kill people with knives, but not nearly as well or as many as they could with guns.

One shot in the air and point the gun at them? A gun should be a deterrent first, and a weapon second.

He probably used the rifle because it held more bullets, and he could aim better. I'm not a gun expert, but surely you can aim better from 20-30 feet with a rifle than with a handgun. Anyways, the point with that type of rifle is they're not used for hunting, and they're not used for carrying around or hiding under your pillow. So why have them at all?
No. You dont fire a warning shot. If you need to draw your weapon to defend yourself you had better put that round on target. Shoot the target until there isn't a threat.

Pontifex, said that there are numerous people walking around with guns that have not attacked me. I agree there are numerous people with guns that have not attacked me but I have no reason to trust that they never will either.

I was trying to point out a scenario where if you lived by a convicted criminal that did you no harm, would you trust them? Like most gun owners, I would not.

My point is, I don't trust most gun owners due to the current protocols, or lack thereof, of obtaining a gun. I have no problem with using guns for recreation. I just don't like most of the people using those guns for recreation. I've been to shoot skeet before and the jackasses carrying their shotguns over their shoulders is disgusting. I've seen too many people being lax with firearms that I just don't trust everyday citizens with them.

how about 100s of years of it rarely happening?

the anti-gun people should seek mental healthcare immediately or turn themselves into the police as they are admitting that if they had access to a gun, they would go on a rampage/killing spree with it.

After reading a lot of posts I have come to the conclusion that the whackjobs in this thread want criminals to succeed and hate the freedoms and rights of our country.

I'm a bit confused . .. . someone said there are close to 300 million guns in america . . . Lets assume that's a high number and there are 150 million guns in america . . why don't we see 150 million murders DAILY!? Even weekly? Even Monthly? Per year?

I mean thats the only thing that gun owners think of all day right? is MURDERING EVERYONE?!

I'm equally baffled that the 5 guns that I own haven't gotten up in the middle of the night and shot people . . . i mean that's what guns DO right? KILL PEOPLE?!?!

Geosurface has been spot on in this thread . . while these incidents are tragic they are rare and statistically not a reason to radically revamp our policies.

In the united states where are most murders commited and for what purpose?
Answer: gangs and drugs . . . stop that and our murder rate will plummet

Statistically "assault" weapons arne't used in a large number of crimes and even fewer so with automatic weapons. CCW gun owners are significantly less likely to commit a crim with a gun than someone that did not legally obtain their gun. Lets stop legislating by emotion and write laws that make sense and might actually work . . . i'm all for "sensible" gun control laws, but the jury's out as to what "sensible" is
