Anyone else look much younger than they really are? I'll be 36 this summer and my wife is 31. We've got one kid about to turn 13 and an 11 year old.
We had our kids before we were ready and have fought hard to provide a great life for them and my wife and I have very successful careers. We know we look young, but the volume in which we hear it from perfect strangers really gets on our nerves.
- Last night, my wife was out with a couple friends and the bartender says "you look like you're 16."
- A week ago at a liquor store, the couple in line ahead of us were a bit put off about being carded (store policy is to card everyone) and the cashier explains the policy takes the burden off her shoulders trying to gauge someone's age "like that kid over there," she says pointing at me. I gave her a bit of a hard time and asked her how old she thought I was before handing her my ID. She thought I was 22.
- A couple months ago at a restaurant, my wife ordered a cocktail. The waitress checked her ID. Then 5 minutes later, the manager comes by and checks her ID, too, claiming the waitress "forgot" if my wife was old enough. In reality, given how closely he scrutinized her ID, he was really checking to see if it was a fake.
Someday when we're in our 50's and people comment that we look like we're in our 30's it'll come across as flattering, but today it's just insulting. We've struggled so much to get where we are and to be treated as though we're children masquerading as adults gets very old, especially the accusatory stares we get when trying to buy liquor. No one says the opposite: "35? You look like you're 50!" so why not keep your comments to yourself.
Anyone else have this same problem and it pisses them off?
