Um, how can you blame people for buying a new video card *that included a "free" copy of HL2* that was supposedly on schedule for release? Time and time again Valve was asked about the release date and they each time they assured the public it was on track. I'm looking forward to HL2 and I own a 9800 but I do not like the shady dealings that went down between ATI and Valve.

So stop ranting about the people who purchased the cards, it's the fault of the graphics card manf (ATI) and video game company (Valve) for bundling coupons for a game that they knew dasmed well wasn't anywhere near done.

And no - I didn't upgrade for HL2 either...

At the time that I bought my 5900 it wasn't worth it and I still think it isn't. A 9600 256MB is a waste of space. People sometimes don't exactly say what they mean. I think everyone is included in this group, but some moreso that others. This is where miscommunication comes in. The English language is very messed up and built upon many inconsistancies. I find it ironic that the highschool in my town is forcing people to learn at least 2 other languages, when it is obvious that more than 90% of the US doesn't speak english correctly. There is a problem here.

I'm curious how a 256MB card would do against a 128MB in Far Cry and how much better the image might look. Because I know that I can't push many settings, even the ones that just up the textures.

My guess is that Videoclone just wanted to see what would happen if he posted a thread like this. I'm guessing that he is very satisfied right about now. I agree with what his point is, just not the way he went about it. Foolish to buy hardware today in anticipation for tomorrows games. One should always wait to see Final Finished benches before deciding on a purchase.

you have a 5900, right? can you not run the demo at maxed settings?

sorry to continue this horrible thread, but seeing as how i'm interested in upgrading my card (and it most likely being a 5900), and part of the reason for the upgrade was not being able to run Far Cry very well, i'd like to know the answer.

I run it at 1152x864x32 with 2xAA/4xAF Performance. I can put Texture Quality, Texture Filter Quality, Shadow Quality and Environment Detail on medium, but everything else has to be on low. I might be able to push up either Texture Quality a little up one more, but I could be pushing it. At 1280x960 with everythin else the same, pushing Texture Quality up one more is pushing it. At 1280x960 with the settings above is just making it to the 30fps and it may dip to 28fps in certain instances such as the jungle.

Here, try following this guide line to see if you experience similar or better.

Level 1 is the smallest performance hit.
Level 3 is the biggest performance hit.

Texture Quality: Level 1
Texture Filter Quality: Level 2
Particle System: Level 2
Special Effects Quality: Level 3
Environmental Quality: Level 2
Shadow Quality: Level 1
Water Quality: Level 3
Lighting Quality: Level 2

At 1024x768 with no AA/AF Quality and everything on Very High except for Texture Filter Quality and Lighting Quality which only go up to Medium and High respectively. You can get 25-35 fps in the outside world including jungles. Inside you would probably get a lot more, about double I would guess. 50-70fps.

Or 1600x1200 4xAA/8xAF Quality with everything at Low and get 15-40fps outside.

Um, that's BS. Read the title of your post - "You People Make Me Sick !" - and try to explain how you don't mean to offend anyone with it. It's a total troll thread but I must admit I took the hook and posted what I thought was a worthwhile response anyway.
