One of my very favorite "true sci-fi" (not like friggen Star Wars or Star Trek), was inspired from Shakespeare's "The Tempest". It was filmed in 1956 and brought sci-fi to a whole new level. It's always a joy to watch:
  • Forbidden Planet

    • "With the help of MGM's special effects wizards, the wonders of the Krell world unfold before us. In visible feet leave portentous footprints in the dirt; a "plastic educator" miraculously visualizes a man's thoughts; men cross over level upon level of self-repairing factories, stretching into seeming infinity; a mischievous monkey gets playfully zapped by an ever-attentive robot. In fact, the special effects department even contributed towards the creation of the film's most memorable character, Robby the Robot. Robby's charmingly superior manner, part Gentleman's Gentleman, part Shakespearean clown, part pot-bellied stove, influenced scores of imitators, from the Michelin man to C3PO."

for me, #1 is undoubtedly Dead Poet's Society...i'd have to give mad props to Forrest Gump tho, i got into college writing my personal statement on the movie

not sure what the future will behold, perhaps things will change come two years the completion of the LOTR trilogy

The American President. Not No.1 though. Too many to list, but it was among the first movie I thought of.

If i could only pick one, it would be a classic... either anything from Hitchcock, or an epic like "Lawrence of Arabia"

Is there any doubt? The movie "Top Gun" is the best ever. It's got action, drama, sex and patriotism!!!

SF: 2001: A Space Odyssey
Horror: The Exorcist
Dramedy: Gross Point Blank
Drama: Network
Comedy, first viewing: "South Park" movie
Comedy, repeated viewings: Airplane
Fantasy: Time Bandits
Western: The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly

My all time favorite would have to be either Network or Time Bandits, because every time I see them I either find something new or marvel at the social relevance contained in either film.

Running a close second would be "Breaking Away," simply for the feel-good innocence that it portrays.
