I work at a Fortune 100 company.
I work with excel files somewhat frequently, and I love to tinker with them to try to automate as much of my work as I can. I typically do my best tinkering at home (outside office hours) where I don't have pressure to be productive, I can visit sketchy websites looking for tips, my system is faster and more familiar, and I can take frequent breaks.
For these reasons, I figured it would be a good idea to bring some work files home with me so I could try to build macros (these files do not contain any personal or client information or even what I would deem as sensative information, it was mostly lists of investment options that we publish in the marketplace anyway). I brought a thumb drive into work, plugged it in, and immediately got a message informing me that a removeable storage device was detected by the system, and that all use of the device would be monitored and reported to to the data security team. I immediately removed the drive.
In a way, the policy did hurt the company a little bit since I won't be developing as many excel apps on my own, but at the same time, I completely understand the policy as most individuals (including myself) do have access to sensative information.
