Your veiws on Manual cars?

I'm decideing on my car right now, Its gonna be a Jetta, but I want a manual cuz it was so fun to drive, I drove a sebring once, but my mom wants me to get auto, what do you guys think?

I'd go auto becuase they are easier to drive, especially in traffic. But I dont' actually drive so....

Manual transmissions run cooler, cause less trouble and are cheaper to maintain.

their not always cheap to maintain... I just blew the clutch in my car, which usually doesnt happen but it is expensive on my car since it's an SUV and 4wd ( 900$)

This should be in Off Topic, but I'll reply nonetheless.

Personally, I think you should go with whatever you would be most comfortable driving. I would go with a manual, because it's got a number of advantages over automatic (some of which have been stated here in this thread).

The only reason to get automatic would be because you're too lazy to shift. But yeah, it is more convenient, so it really depends when and where you'll be driving (how long of periods of time, etc).

If I bought any car that offered a manual or auto, I would pick the manual. That's my own personal opinion. It gives you more control over the car and makes driving more fun. The Jetta is a awesome sports-Euro-tuned-great handling package. You will have fun!

I've always drove manual since my first car and is my preferred choice. However, if I were to drive in rush hour traffic everyday then I'd definitely go automatic. In slow moving traffic auto is better. Since I don't do rush hour traffic I use manual. Auto is for slow people

When I first started driving, I always took my moms car, just cause it was auto. Now, ever since I got my own car, with manual, I can never go back to auto. I feel I have so much more control over the car.

When I get in my moms car, I always find myself trying to press the clutch that isnt there

I myself have been driving an automatic shift ever since learning how to drive 4 years ago, and now my current car at home didn't pass inspection and my dad will donate it somewhere and get a receipt for tax deduction (which is a good idea since he gets the bluebook value). I'll be learning how to drive a manual over my winter and spring breaks so I can get a car with manual shift - this is something I've determined I definitely have to do. My dad even supports my decision because he used to drive a manual (many many years ago around the time I was born) and just talks about how fun it is.

If you try with the manual for 30 mins to 1 hour a day, you will be driving standard in about a week.

Ya gotta go manual! Assuming you don't drive in rush-hour traffic alot, manual is far superior. You will have more power, more reliability and more fun! If you drive it hard you might end up with a worn clutch in a few years, but it's cheaper than a new automatic tranny!

I learned to drive using a 5-speed on a 1991 BMW M3. It was a blast! Unfortunately, as soon as I got my license, my parents got rid of the BMW for a Toyota Camry of all cars! They were tired the of the expensive repair costs. Manuals are for people who have a passion for driving and want to have full control over the engine for maximum performance. As soon as I get out of college, I'm going back to a manual, hopefully in another M3 or 330ci .

I have a 95' Jetta GLX (VR6) w/ 152,000 miles on it and trust me you will not regret purchasing one of these cars. Oh, and manual trannys are more versatile , easier to deal w/, gets better gas mileage, and can slow down w/o having to be on the brake panicking other drivers for no reason. I have found it easy to kind of "temper" trafic by not having to be on the brake pedal all the time where small fluctuations in speed arise.

Manual trannys are good and so are Jettas!!

Once you get used to manual, its a VERY hard to go to auto. I'm about to purchase a car (91' MR2 Turbo) and for what its worth, its the most fun car I've ever driven.

I hope your getting the Jetta with the VR6, the 2.2L 4bangers don't have any balls. VR6 has mad tourque, you'll be rippin the riceboys up in no time =)

Manual-Shift cars are like fast PC's They are fast, but not for everyone. I can never handle an automatic-shift car as well as a manual. The coolest things are Porsche's Steptronic and Ferrari's Teutronic (close?) F1 shifters! Hell yea!!!

manual. I drive an auto mx6 tho... then again, i was sorta given the car so i can't complain The transmission may go flaky on me soon, i have to get it looked at.. so if it's a bomb, may wanna see if i can switch it to a manual tranny


My dad had a 91 galant that was manual (not a sport car, so it WOULD be hard to resell )... and altho it was crappy condition (my dad isn't the best person and keeping a car in good shape), it was stick... what i loved best was just coasting almost halfway to school since it was a slight decline

Again, like most ppl say, the downside is if you drive in a lot of heavy traffic/stop and go.

I see from your profile you live in Michigan. That right there should be enough for you to get a manual. There's nothing like trying to stop an automatic transmission going downhill in the snow to help you make up your mind

Plus, with a standard you get better acceleration and quicker response

Manual all the way. Even in rush hour traffic, it's really not that big of a deal. Unless you're one of those people who gets no joy at all out of driving. Then get an auto, & be happy with the point & click approach to driving. But if a windy country road at 3 AM makes you horny...

Get a manual.
