Z77 RAM OC on 32GB's

I am a novice at overclocking, but just wanted to know if I could leave the the i7 3770k CPU at stock speeds and Overclock the RAM seperately...?

My reasons are simple, I don't like the heat I see from the 3770k, and mostly because I will use the HD4000 w/o a Graphics card, but rather a PCI-e 1X for connection to a 1U DSP rack for live performance.
So the HSFs I am seeing for a 1U are rated at 99 watts, but I work the memory subsystem really hard and the T-Topology of the Asus boards show excellent DPC latency which is highly desirable.
Every note I play on my MIDI Controllers trigger audio samples randomly, so my SSDs are based on the 90k I/O and random reads of the Vertx 4 SSD's.
I need to run the RAM as fast as possible w/o touching the CPU, so is it possible to keep the DRAM voltage at 1.5v, as this is what I think I will need to run a large RAM footprint, and OC on the ASUS, or should I buy really fast RAM and undervolt it...?

On my X587 wouldnlt revognize the RAM above 8GB's until I indervolted the DRAM from 1.65v to 1.5v.

I really don;t want to bjuy the expensive RAM with the SPD set at 1.65v, just to fond out I have to undervolt it, and could have bought cheaper RAM for the task at hand...

Yes you can. You could also overclock the CPU without touching the memory.

Thanks mates, I really like the 1.3v Samsung idea, I will look into that now.
I am getting the Z77/i7 3770k but not unitl I quit reading about the troubles of the usual early releases.

Cheers

It's actually Samsung Green 30nm RAM at 1.35V not 1.3 (I bought 4, but I can't install them yet so I can't say for sure they overclock well!)
Timings: 1600 Mbps 11-11-11-28-1T @ 1.35V
Here's kitguru's review : link
They get 2133Mhz 11-11-11-28-1T @ 1.5V

Oh, and the Samsung RAM is tiny ... it's only a little wider than my finger! (checkout kitguru's gallery for a comparaison) After a quick search on Newegg, all RAM at 2,133Mhz has big heatspeaders, but these don't need any!

Excellent.
I was reqading about the Greens' voltage as well as low profile.
It's what the doctor ordered for a 1U design where RAM, not CPU is the main concern.

I don't think heat spreaders do anything except dress up.

Besides, I only want 1.5v for polyphony reasons ( more notes from faster buffer refills) so the heat will be way less than the 1.65v or 1.72v.
This will be a novel 1U actually as everyone I know igoing to 3800 USD ADK Pro Laptops, there are very good, but my costs are 1350 USD, so the other 2 large can go into the kitty.

Thanks Guys, Always Great stopping in here.

Intels ivy bridge and sandy bridge use 1.5v memory....

Intel states to use 1.5v memory because they specify 1600 memory. In reality 1.65v memory is fine. There are overclockdrs who run ddr3 3000 at 1.7v on a daily basis with no issues.

well we don't know how long that's been going to last. and we only have "their" word that they've been doing it 24/7

I ran 1.65v memory on my 2500K daily with no degradation for over a year and even pushing 1.70v on dominators to bench.

While I agree with you in theory Don are you going to replace this guys chip if running higher voltage RAM nails his CPU because this is what intel is saying can happen running outside of spec.

OP have a look at corsair RAM aswell, they produce vengeance and vengeance low profile at 1.35v stock also if I remember correctly.
